Question Tires for S55 2005

Hi,

I’m new owner of a S55 AMG 2005. The car needs new tires has anyone had any experience with the Goodyear F1 All Seasonal?

What tire gives the best tread life compare to the best wet traction?

Thank you all in advance.

Don

Isn't the F1 All Season new? I have the F1, GS-D3.

Not certain what sizes the S requires v. the CL but here's my experience with the CL55:
Best wet traction, the Goodyear's, however living in DFW I don't drive in the wet too often.

Bridgestone Re050 - 8,000 miles
Install ASP pulley
Michelin PS2's -4,800 miles
Goodyear GS-D3's - 3,800 miles

The Goodyear's have a higher treadwear rating than the Michelin's as do the Bridgestones.

In the interest of full disclosure, I never spin the tires from a stand but I have a place where I can go from 10mph to 140 at least 3x per week.

I put the GS-D3's back on because they gave them to me for 1/2 price but I see Bridgestone's in my future again.

wish i could help...i'm always looking for the best traction tire and i don't care about tread life!

i use to have the goodyear gsd3s and they were great in the rain but lasted about 10k miles on my s500...but i drive hard!

i'm not sure about the the s55...i know the 600's require an xl load rating which gives you about 3 tire choices and they all suck.

make sure you get a tire that matches the load rating.

good luck!

To meet minimum requrements as good as the Original tires on my'03, you the XL rating on the REo50's.

That is 101Y for the fronts, 100Y for the rears.

So those would be "Y" rated tires, not just Z-rated.

You can't go wrong with Michelin. I have always been pleased with their performance.

After much data mining I purchased the BFG GFORCE Super A/S

front 245/45 18 ZR

Rear 275/40 18 ZR

Only 300 miles so far they stick to the road in the rain and the road nosie is very low to none

I will post a full review in 30 days

PS2s

I have 19 inch wheels on my 04 S55. I just recently replaced the factory Pilot Sports with PS2s with about 7K miles on them. I'm very happy with them because they have outstanding dry and wet traction, but most importantly they are quiet compared to the Goodyears, plus they provide a more compliant ride. vs. the goodyear or the RE050s. Tread life all depends on how hard you are on your tires and driving style. I've been able to get 40K miles on the PS2s on my E430. I have the RE050A pole Positions on another 04 CLK55 AMG. I do not like the Bridgestones on the CLK55, not grippy enough, and wears out pretty quick, compared to the PS2s on my S55. Its a significantly heavier car and treads on the PS2s are better than the Bridgestones. IMHO, all the top performance tires are going to give you pretty dry and wet traction, and given the kind of car we have (an S class), I doubt if it will make much difference on daily driving. What will be important is ride quality, noise and wear. That's my way of gauging which tire to buy. Hope this helps.

Hi All,

Update on the BFG’s that I installed.

Total miles on tires 2,000 Highway noise none to be concerned with, the exhaust make more noise than the tires. The car handles like a dream at highway speed with these tires no problem taking ramps at higher speed and moving around other slower cars.
City and Mountain driving is the same as highway it’s like the car is on tracks.
Rain and cold weather does not affect how the tire performs.
When I get 10,000 miles on the tires I will update this post on the tread life.
The only down side is the Y rating on the tires but then again I’m noting going to drive the car much over the posted speed limit.

What's the problem? Y is rated for 186 MPH. It's the highest speed rating there is, except for (Y), which only means "in excess of 186 MPH." Are you concerned they're only Y-rated and not (Y)-rated? Unless you remove the 155 MPH limiter, what's the difference?

Added: it occurs that some might think Y is a lower rating than Z. That's not the case. Z means "in excess of 149 MPH." Recognizing that this doesn't say how much in excess, they added two ratings that further qualify Z: W (168 MPH rated) and Y (186 MPH rated).

That's different. Y is a speed rating, but 98 vs. 101 is a load rating. 98 is good for 1,653 lbs. per wheel and 101 is good for 1819 lbs. I doubt that you'll get your car loaded enough to exceed a 98 rating. You'd need 5 300 pound passengers and a trunk full of gold bullion.

Just watch the trunk full of gold and you can go 186 MPH without concern -- at least for your tires.

Update on tires 15,000 miles

Hi all,

The tires have 15,000 miles on them now and the front tires are still looking great. Ther rear tires are going fast the tread is almost gone if I get another 10,000 miles on them I will be lucky.

The tires are rate for 40,000 miles 400 rating so I am disappointed in the tread life of the tires.

So I'm back looking at the data again trying to figure out which tire will last on S55.

Wow, 15K mile and maybe another 10K left?! That's great.
I've had my S55 for about 5 months and put around 6000 miles on it. The fronts/rears were new Michelin PS A/S when I traded for it but the rears are almost gone at this point. The center wore down to the wear bars but the sides have about 25% tread life! I deflated the tire to 31psi cold and they are now wearing on the outer tread. The dealer put 285/35's on the rears which is way wrong, talk about low profile.
I bought the same size rear replacements as yourself, 275/40, but am waiting until either winter or threads show themselves. I Need as much tread as possible for the snow.
Coming from an FX45 it will be a challenge driving this rear wheel drive sled in the snow.

My understanding is that the XL Load Rating is a critical factor for both the S-Class and the CL-Class. If you run some of the cheaper All Season Tires, (like the Michelin PIlot Sport A/S Plus), that lack the XL Load Rating, don't be surprised when you don't get the expected mileage, especially on the Rear Tires. The vehicle is simply too heavy for those tires whether you carry a lot of passengers/luggage or not. Mercedes actually considers it a safey issue to use tires with less than an XL Load Range on these models..

In my opinion, it is best to go with the Michelin Pilot Sport PS2's with the XL Load rating for these heavier cars. It is a Max Perormance Summer Tire, but the expected mileage is better than with the orignal Pilot Sport Tires.

do you realize you posted to a thread that is over two years dead? I hope the OP has his tires by now

as for the load rating, I agree that it's there for a reason. I upsized my rears from 265/18 to 275/18 so I could get Continental DWS all around.

Even though this is an old thread, I'll post my experience for anyone else who's looking for tires.

I currently have Bridgestone Potenza RE960AS Pole Position's on my CL55 (stock 18" wheels). They're good in the dry and wet, and pretty good in the snow (for not a snow tire). The rears were down to the wear bars after ~12,000 mi, and based on how little the fronts had worn when I replaced the rears they will last at least twice as long. You can get them from Tirerack in the proper load rating and W speed rating.
