Tires for S55 2005
I’m new owner of a S55 AMG 2005. The car needs new tires has anyone had any experience with the Goodyear F1 All Seasonal?
What tire gives the best tread life compare to the best wet traction?
Thank you all in advance.
Don
Not certain what sizes the S requires v. the CL but here's my experience with the CL55:
Best wet traction, the Goodyear's, however living in DFW I don't drive in the wet too often.
Bridgestone Re050 - 8,000 miles
Install ASP pulley
Michelin PS2's -4,800 miles
Goodyear GS-D3's - 3,800 miles
The Goodyear's have a higher treadwear rating than the Michelin's as do the Bridgestones.
In the interest of full disclosure, I never spin the tires from a stand but I have a place where I can go from 10mph to 140 at least 3x per week.
I put the GS-D3's back on because they gave them to me for 1/2 price but I see Bridgestone's in my future again.
i use to have the goodyear gsd3s and they were great in the rain but lasted about 10k miles on my s500...but i drive hard!
i'm not sure about the the s55...i know the 600's require an xl load rating which gives you about 3 tire choices and they all suck.
make sure you get a tire that matches the load rating.
good luck!

That is 101Y for the fronts, 100Y for the rears.
So those would be "Y" rated tires, not just Z-rated.
front 245/45 18 ZR
Rear 275/40 18 ZR
Only 300 miles so far they stick to the road in the rain and the road nosie is very low to none
I will post a full review in 30 days

Update on the BFG’s that I installed.
Total miles on tires 2,000 Highway noise none to be concerned with, the exhaust make more noise than the tires. The car handles like a dream at highway speed with these tires no problem taking ramps at higher speed and moving around other slower cars.
City and Mountain driving is the same as highway it’s like the car is on tracks.
Rain and cold weather does not affect how the tire performs.
When I get 10,000 miles on the tires I will update this post on the tread life.
The only down side is the Y rating on the tires but then again I’m noting going to drive the car much over the posted speed limit.
Added: it occurs that some might think Y is a lower rating than Z. That's not the case. Z means "in excess of 149 MPH." Recognizing that this doesn't say how much in excess, they added two ratings that further qualify Z: W (168 MPH rated) and Y (186 MPH rated).

Just watch the trunk full of gold and you can go 186 MPH without concern -- at least for your tires.
The tires have 15,000 miles on them now and the front tires are still looking great. Ther rear tires are going fast the tread is almost gone if I get another 10,000 miles on them I will be lucky.
The tires are rate for 40,000 miles 400 rating so I am disappointed in the tread life of the tires.
So I'm back looking at the data again trying to figure out which tire will last on S55.
I've had my S55 for about 5 months and put around 6000 miles on it. The fronts/rears were new Michelin PS A/S when I traded for it but the rears are almost gone at this point. The center wore down to the wear bars but the sides have about 25% tread life! I deflated the tire to 31psi cold and they are now wearing on the outer tread. The dealer put 285/35's on the rears which is way wrong, talk about low profile.
I bought the same size rear replacements as yourself, 275/40, but am waiting until either winter or threads show themselves. I Need as much tread as possible for the snow.
Coming from an FX45 it will be a challenge driving this rear wheel drive sled in the snow.
In my opinion, it is best to go with the Michelin Pilot Sport PS2's with the XL Load rating for these heavier cars. It is a Max Perormance Summer Tire, but the expected mileage is better than with the orignal Pilot Sport Tires.

as for the load rating, I agree that it's there for a reason. I upsized my rears from 265/18 to 275/18 so I could get Continental DWS all around.
I currently have Bridgestone Potenza RE960AS Pole Position's on my CL55 (stock 18" wheels). They're good in the dry and wet, and pretty good in the snow (for not a snow tire). The rears were down to the wear bars after ~12,000 mi, and based on how little the fronts had worn when I replaced the rears they will last at least twice as long. You can get them from Tirerack in the proper load rating and W speed rating.
