Won't be able to tell from just a description. You'd need to inspect service records and eventually dyno the car to see its baseline reading. If the car's been well maintained by a responsible adult, chances are the engine will still perform within an acceptable range given its age.

I'm sure with a minor tune up if even needed unless completely abused (these cars were made to be hard on) it will have almost the same power it came with.. I just watched a video with an E55 with well over 400k miles and it was still going as strong as a new one. The guy driving it said it drove like it had 40k miles on it..

The engine bay looks clean and not like those dealer shiny clean that try to hide the oil leaks. If the car clean inside and out, the previous owner may took care of her. so you may have a pretty good condition S55 to start with. But just remember for the mileage on the car, you will need to do some maintenance like spark plug, belts, coolant flash, transmission services.etc. also expect problem coming anytime for ABC system, electrical problem.
I believe average $2k-3k for each year repair cost is acceptable for these kind of car.

my car was spotless super clean and i put 5k on it and next thing i know it needed a abc pump,belts-3k
drove it another 15k -bushings,rear mainseal, tranny service the list goes on and on.
have at least over 3k saved up when it breaks because it will and it will be expensive. if i had to do it all over again i wouldnt. i would be happy in a pos subpar car wearing a rolex that i bought from all the money i saved not keeping the car running

you need maintenence records. if it has not been replaced, a bad IC pump will make the car feel like it has no power. Easy fix. the problem is the suspension. If you are driving lots of miles, make sure the suspension has been highly maintained and has fresh parts. You can easily spend 5-10k on a poorly maintained ABC system. And of course, give the motor a once over. This is an example of a car that a 300 PPI should be skipped at your own peril, and may be worth ten times what you paid in maintenance avoided or negotiated purchase price based on result.

If you're worried this car will cost too much to fix, than you shouldn't buy it. Plain and simple. It's a total crap shoot. I paid $14k in repairs the first 2 years I had my AMG S Class Car and it was a 2008, much newer.
If you're set on getting it, just understand it could easily cost $2500-6000 per year to fix it when stuff breaks, depending on what breaks. Did you have a dealer or indie do a PRE PURCHASE INSPECTION on it? I wouldn't even consider buying this car if I were you without that. It could need $8500 worth of work done to it! And you may not find out for 3-6 months. Or, you could get a great car and super enjoy it for years. It's Las Vegas odds, nothing better. Good luck. They are GREAT CARS if they don't cost too much to keep running well.

Ah ok. I was going to do the same as I hadn't heard good things about the rebuilts but my specialist buddy said this brand was a really well known rebuilder and he hadn't had any bad ones so I took the chance. I think it was about $300

Before I bought my 1999 E55 AMG I was in the market for an S55. I inspected 4. Each one had suspension issues, codes, dashboard warnings. Needless to say I passed even though the cars were a thrill to drive.
