2005 S55 AMG no start when hot

Hello all,

Noob here. I bought a 2005 S55 AMG this past October 2017 with 75K miles. I love the car. Interior looks like it has never been sat in. A friend has 3 AMGs (s65, sl55, cl65) and I fell in love with them and bought one of my own.

Lately it has developed a "hard to start/no start" problem when hot. If the car is hot (i.e., operating temp) and it sits for up to 15-20 minutes, it cranks hard but takes a few seconds to start. If the hot car sits for half hour or so, it will crank hard but will not fire and start. After sitting for a while and cooling (couple hours), it will start fine and very quick just like a cold start. My searching has led me to suspect the Crankshaft Position Sensor.

Sound about right?

Thanks,

Crank position sensor is not uncommon. Easy replacement that even if it does not fix the problem is good practice.

Plug it in and check for codes.

If that does not fix the problem, check the fuel pressure. My 2003 S55 did the same thing and ended up being the fuel pump.

Same here on my ‘06, beginning around 100k Miles, would have a sporadic extended crank. Threw a CPS at it for kicks, no change. But it was sporadic so it didn’t bother me. Eventually the fuel pump revealed itself as the problem. Since either can leave you stranded, I’d do a CPS, fuel pump and fuel filter. But first to be sure, do what DRTYLNDY says and check fuel pressure during the no start condition.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I am dropping the car off at the mercedes mechanic tonight. He suspects CPS as well, and we will discuss the other possible culprits.

65's don't seem to suffer from the CPS faults, that was more on the v6/v8 cars.

Dropped the S55 off at dealer yesterday evening and the mechanic had the new CPS sensor in his hand. He may need to keep the car for a couple of days because it has developed a really noisy squeaking/creaking from the front left suspension. He doesn't think its a ball joint, but he has heard it and is going to address that issue as well. I hope the new CPS resolves the no start. I will keep you posted

Sounds like ball joints to me. Mine started making noise last fall, replaced this spring when I brought the car back out. GL, keep us posted. Do not, I repeat DO NOT let the dealer “hunt and peck” on your car. You won’t be happy with the service or the car at the end of that process. Better to tell those guys what to do, than ask them what they think they should do. ABC related matters is about all I let the dealer do, because I want them on the hook for it. Even then, I tell them what to do.

Cheers,

maw

The mechanic told me the car is ready. He's says it will start "sometimes all the time now". He's a pretty funny guy. He's also a pretty busy guy and I haven't had a chance to talk with him about the suspension squeaking/creaking issue but will find out this evening when i pick up the car. I will keep you posted.

LOL.... I had a set of 'Diagnostic dice' which had different parts each side of them. Made for good humor.

I told the mechanic about "Diagnostic Dice" and we had a good laugh while he told me of several customer-related diagnostic disasters over the years. So I the car back last night, and it is starting and running exquisitely. The new CPS sensor seems to have fixed the "no start when hot" issue i was having. The suspension squeaking was caused caused by a bushing and he lubed it up and now it is quiet as a mouse!

Hi,

Can you please tell me which front bushing or mount that needed attention to solve the squeaking?

Thanks

I will ask the mechanic which bushing was squeaking specifically. When I asked him the other day what was squeaking in the front, he simply replied "bushing" LOL

With the new CPS sensor the car is starting flawlessly
