AMG GT Sedan

So this should be shown early March at Geneva... was wondering what you all thought about it.. a sedan version of the GT. I am not sure how many I'll try and get and the demand or no?

Link of a couple spy pics and info

Weeeeeee!!!
Spoke to a big dealership in Atlanta yesterday that I know well, not a single person has inquired to them about this car.

Not really surprising, aside for a few mentions here and there not many people even know about it.

It's an interesting niche segment MB is going for ... is the 6 series grand coupe such a high seller that MB wanted to compete with it?

I know the new Panamera sales have been very robust so maybe there is a market for high priced four door GT car, but that's more of the S class segment.

This is something I might be interested in ... how awesome would it be if they made a shooting brake version.

I talked to a New Car Sales Manager at a MB dealership in Atlanta who had recently returned from a private showing of this car. He stated that he thought it would ‘transform’ the high performance 4-door sedan segment, and I think he may be correct. The top-of-the-line version is supposed to have 770-800 HP; AWD with the front wheels driven electrically, and the ability to travel up to 30 miles on battery power alone. Sounds like a winner to me, especially if there is a GTR version.

I suppose they call it a GT sedan to position the car that way. Technically itís based on the new CLS and shares the parts with the E/CLS, apart from the rear wheel steering coming from the GT C/R.

No doubt, this will be an interesting car. Itíll be the quickest AMG to date, well apart from the Project1. There is definitely a larger customer base for these than the GT models so I think this will likely be a winner in terms of sales.

Not sure how I feel about the Edition 1 model that will apparently feature a fixed rear wing a la ED1 GTs

Personally, if a 4 door version of the AMG GT sedan comes out, then it's something me and my family will be interested in.

Autocar article

Some interesting info. 4 powertrain options, with the top 3 being hybrid. Taking the Panamera approach in that there is a hybrid on top.

As the article says.. Im sure the hybrids will be to start the assault of the EQ branded electric variants of cars...I got my 1st C350e with EQ power branding on it the other day

I be surprised if they offer more than 3 variants.. 53 AMG hybrid, the 63 and whatever the range topper is... hybrid..

I think they may have the CLS top out at 53, and the GT 4-door start at 63, but we'll see.

Probably for the same reason most people buy the SL rather than the GT.

True, i had to show someone looking at a GT cab an SL because I told him for the same price you can have a grand tourer/comfy (by comparison) Sl or if they wanted a sports car then the GT cab... they bought the SL550... granted I did the same thing a month later and they took the GT

more pics of the GT sedan in the wind tunnel

I don't think they would do a full electric version. I think full EVs will be on dedicated EV platforms, as they should be imo.

2018 GT
Years ago Mercedes promised us an all electric SLS. Never happened. (Wikipedia says it was a prototype and that fewer than 100 units were sold. Were any sold at all?)

Mercedes is pushing the EQ electric cars pretty hard I think.. hence the new Brand and entry in formula E (sorry DTM). They will show the new EQ-C at Geneva in a couple weeks.

There will be a pretty aggressive electric version (800hp rumors?) but probably right on that it wont be a full even on this chassis... Tobias Moers did say EV's (or maybe he said electrification) are going to be major in AMG's future

I feel confident Mercedes will entertain a full electric version to compete with the Porsche Mission E.

There is imo zero chance that they take this GT 4-door chassis and and introduce a full electric version.

For an EV to be really good and take advantage of the advantages that EV allows, you need a platform specific to EV. MB WILL have those, and that is where we will see future full EVs from MB (and AMG), past limited-production experiments aside. Not by taking an ICE/hybrid chassis and making it a full EV.

How do you explain the SLS AMG Electric Drive and Audi R8 E-tron?

As I said, "past limited-production experiments aside".

The future of EVs belongs to EV-optimized, EV-dedicated platforms. And I think it is clear that MB is indeed going that route. It is the less-well-resourced companies like Aston Martin that might put out EVs that aren't on EV-optimized platforms, and such models are unlikely to achieve sales success, imo.
