What to do when you go to install headers and the first 2 bolts snap in the head.

i guess it was because it's a New England car. I don't want to fight with broken studs in the car and figured I could do other maintenance while it was out.
On another note not what are these motors and transmission worth. Now might be a good time for a
turbo LS swap.

It's out and the broken studs are removed. One more broke on me so there was a total of 3. The broken studs came out very hard and with lots of heat. There is no way this could have been done in car.
Now I have a few questions.
Whats the Tq spec on the valve cover bolts, oil pan(upper and lower), rear main seal plate and intake manifold bolts? Also I removed the EGR tube from the manifold, how does this go back together?

Good on you, what a nightmare! Do your rear main seal while it's out, I've got to do mine and I'm dreading pulling the trans to access it. How long did it take to get the engine out start to finish?

Guys these cars are getting old and old cars have a lot more problems than they did when new. Mercedes or not 16 years old and 240k miles corrosion and rust become major problems. In the last 2 years I've had every suspension, drivetrain, and break part out of this car. If you take your time and have some mechanical skill you can do it. These cars are pretty basic and are a great deal these days.
If your not sure about something just ask or do research on it first.

Resealed the upper and lower oil pans. Installed a new rear main seal. New exhaust manifold studs, nuts, and gaskets. Just about ready to go back in, hoping for tonight if I can get away.

Intake is on and all wired up. I also split the intake and clean it up. Sorry no pics of that step. It was by far the worst part of the job. The egr tube was a little difficult and I broke the nipple off the solenoid on the front 😡 Going to attempt to fix that tomorrow. Just the O2 sensors, and everything in front of the motor. Putting a new condenser and fan shroud in.

when you split the intake manifold, did you also replace the thin rubber air hose which is connected to EGR valve in front of the intake manifold?
rubber hose is on the under side in front of intake manifold.
when rubber hose goes brittle from engine heat it's a cheap part to buy, but you have to buy complete intake manifold fitted with rubber hose if you want to replace this brittle hose, and that's because of a design flaw from Mercedes engine team.
intake manifolds are only sold complete with rubber hose at stealership.
cheapest way to repair is to split intake like you did and do a MacGyver repair

The rubber hose was still in good shape and functioned fine. One thing I did do is put a bunch of silicone around the hose where it entered the manifold just to help protect it.
Got the new ac condenser in. Just waiting on some parts from Mercedes to finish this thing up.
