Guys,
I have a 98 SL-600 sport and I need to buy new tires. What do you like?

No Doubt....

I have bought 2 sets of the Pilot Sport AS 2 for 129's in the past year...very expensive, and worth it.

Agreed... those are what I ran on my DeLoreans. They're better than anything on the market. The tires are very smooth riding, don't require much if any weight balancing, they have good wear, good grip, they're quiet... I could go on and on. Well worth the money for classic European cars.

Only few months ago, I needed to change tires too and was recommended Goodyear. (I said to myself, Goodyear ??? Never tried before).

I did go along with the recommendation and I am pleasantly surprised as to how good the tires are and match my SL600. I believe the tires are made in Japan. But then, you can always spend more by going with Michelin and the rest, which I have used before and happy also. Just my 2 cents. w/ smiles Jimmy

Here's the requested specs for GoodYear Tires, Eagle RevSpec RS-02 Tires:

Front: 245/40R18 93W
Rear: 275/35R18 95W

I have had this GoodYear for less than six months, but I am very impressed with the overall quality and feel, as relative to other brands I tried before, like Michelin, Bridgestone, etc. w/ smiles Jimmy

My tire choices would be:

Yokohamas. I used ES100's on my old SL. Price is very reasonable and performed will for me.

Nitto. I used the NT555 model. Not the drag radial model. Again price was reasonable and also performed well.

Nexen. N3000. These tires were dollar sign cheap!! I love these tires, cheap but lasted forever! 20k miles and tread is still fresh. These aren't as good as the other two mentioned, but I cannot complain for the price and the life of these tires. Let's just say one set of these outlasted both of the other two sets.

Another good set of tires that won't last too long though are falken azenis. These aren't too expensive either, but can be depending on size.

Always had good luck with Contis, though I also use Michelin and Pirelli. All the major brands work well for general driving/fun, just avoid cheap tires/no name brands as tires are so important.

I have Michelin Pilot Sports on my SL 500, and my E350. I have also had them on 2 CLK's a 500 and a 55. I think they are the best out there, quiet, great handling and they wear a long time for a high performance tire on a heavy car.

Conti tires are junk, the side walls cracked/splitting on the inside and only lasted 17,000 mi. I changed them to Nexen and we love them .

The Nexen brand ride much better. They were a whole lot less money and the road noise is sooo much better. The tire guy told me the side walls would be cracked before he took then off, I could not believe how bad they were!

As you know there are different versions of Pilot Sports. The best IMO is the PS2.

I had 245/40/18's on the front that lasted 30K miles. The rear 275/35/18's lasted 17K miles with moderate town driving so I bought a pair of 6/32 used PS's until the front caught up with the wear.

My first set of staggered PS2's cost $1250.00 out the door. As great a tire that they are they have IMO priced themselves out of my check book at $1500.00.

So I did my research and ended up buying a staggered set of Conti DW's for $988.00 with Americas/Discount Tire Road Hazard Warranty of which I usually don't buy but I had two seperate screws, two seperate times in my rear drivers side 275/35/18 PS2's. Too costly! BTW, I've since come to find out that low profile tires are more prone to sidewall nails and screws. Go figure.
