After illiminating one duplicate entry, dropping blueSL (sorry) and adding ... PSI310398 at 41 years ... b4mmy at 36 years ... HKSL at 34 years ... and even though he only declaired this on another thread joe1388 at 76 years.
The average age of 78 SL owner's declairing their age = 36.7 years.
We all probably feel 18 years again when we are driving top down .

Even though ChrisB stated my age in his post, I feel I should officialy confirm it. I was born in 1929 and a 76 still feel and act like a much younger person. Age is irrelevant if you have high spirits. By the way am I the oldest person in this forum? Would like to know.

I annoy my kids cause I listen to their type of music...
In fact ,all my cars have amp and sub and I buy more rap and r&b than my kids ...That does'nt mean that's the only music I listen to...I also go to operas
and classic concerts...It pays to be a grown up...The knowledge is wide.

Just picked up my '98 SL500 Sport this Oct. I bought it in Chicago and drove it 2300 mi. to Calif. in 23 hours. It was and is one sweet ride! I've acted like a kid, opening the door to the garage to check it out at nite, sitting in it listening to the stereo and pinching myself every now and then just to be sure.
All this and I'm 56 going on 20 'cept my freakin' back.....

I have to say that I was born with a steering wheel in my hands. I grew up loving and appreciating cars, still do, and hope to one day have my own collection. I am 17 right now, and cannot be more thankful for having such a great car.

How old are the R129 drivers on this forum?
Hey fellas. Found this forum while looking for performance upgrades for my SL. To address the question of this thread: After my home's windows vibrated with the jet's explosion into the pentagon on 9/11, two miles away, a sub conscientious vibe must have taken root. Having always owned the practical auto, SUV or P/U, I came home Halloween evening with a new Vette. Initially, so sweet. Kept it a week before returning it to the dealer. That car, I felt was going to kill me. I continued to search for The Car and ended up at the MB dealer. Met a great guy there, the salesman, Richard, who really spent some time helping me get a handle on just what I was truly looking for. He put me in a 2000 SL 600 and turned me loose. I returned after the test drive, expecting the hard push from him to close the deal. All he said was why don’t you take it home, and call me tomorrow.
Next day I showed up in the afternoon, and made the purchase. I was totally smitten. I used all the negative financial impacts of 9/11 to my advantage and purchased this fully loaded, one year old with 4000 miles for $80,000.00 cash. No brag, just couldn’t buy a toy on credit.
For months I wouldn’t put the cover on her, since I was in and out of the garage at all hours just to make sure I wasn’t dreaming. I was 43 at the time. I would wake up at 3:00AM just to drive her on open, traffic-free roads. Don’t think I could have chosen a better ride. No offense to the guys who claim the 500 is easier to drive and as satisfying, I can’t believe you driven a 600. When I punch it and that front-end suspension raises up three to four inches and I’m pushed back into that leather seat, I’m on a highway to heaven. Love the top down and love the look and tighter feel with the pano top. It’s almost like having two cars. The car rides on rails, so tight.
On rare occasions, my practical side, says “You’re an idiot. You could have invested that 80K and tripled it by now.” When this happens, I respond, “Hey enjoy the flowers, that’s why you work so hard.”
Now, almost 4.5 years later, although I lust for the Aston DB9, I love the 600 dearly and still peak into the garage, confirming reality.
I know some may bust on me for the length of the post, but, after reading this entire thread, I felt others may have left the feeling un-stated.
Anyway, I am looking to enhance HP for the 600 and would appreciate all constructive info.
All the best to you and yours for this New Year and those to come.

I'm glad you enjoy it, it's a fantastic car. Regarding performance modifications, I swapped out the filters (K&N) and currently have an exhaust sitting in my trunk waiting for installation. Combined, they will increase airflow which will improve overall power by roughly 8%. Another part worth looking into will be the Powerchips Upgrade. I posted on it earlier, here is the link.

I hope this helps and Good Luck!

You want to check out a couple of my essays on driving and owning the SL500:

As far as the 500 vs. 600 debate: I am willing to admit that I want more power. Well, I guess what I really want is more off the line torque. But when it comes to power, it seems there is never enough. Even you are looking to modify your 600.
At the end of the day, I am sure that both types are lovable and fantastic. There is enough love for R129's on this board to extend to the 500's, 600's with a little tiny bit left over for the 300's and 320's. But just a little.
BTW, I still am so in love with my baby. It is a clear beautiful day almost 80 degrees here in sunny So. Cal. So, I had to drive her to work today. The freeways were Friday light, so I had fun. I wish I had the top off.
But even with the top on . . . Blasting up to 90 MPH on the I-5, one of the world's busiest freeways, during "rush hour" and watching cars move out of my way . . . such a kick. Such a freaking KICK!!!
These cars seem to demand respect on the road. People move out of your way! Especially at night with the Xenon's on; even low beam.
See . . . I'm in love.
P.S. If I had the bucks, I probably go for a DB9, too -- but I wouldn't get rid of my baby.

mebeJOE;
I just drove my Silver Comet from Georgia to Florida and I experienced the same driving on I-75. Got on the extreme left just out of Atlanta set it at 90 and you are right, people just get out of your way. Those that dont move are left with their mouth open when in an instant I pass them doing 100+. Quite a freaking rush!!!! Later, JOE

I've loved the R129 body style since they came out but had to wait till I had finished paying off my second divorce before I could really afford to get one at the age of 38. About to turn 41 now and still love it.
