Convertible top/roll inoperative since battery replacement
Since replacing the battery in my '97 SL500, neither will operate and dash the lights for both the hardtop and the roll bar are continuously. The top is up. Is there a reset I can do? OR, how do I put the top down manually and possibly reset the sequence? I am aware of how to unlock the windshield latches, but I don't know how to unlock the rear latches. Thanks for any help on this.
Depending on year, there are 2 levers (locks) in the trunk right behind the hydraulic assist for the trunk deck. If you have the tools that came with the car there is a “wrench” for locking and unlocking these
I just purchased a 1997 SL320 and the PO had recently replaced the battery. Needed a code for radio, which I found in owners manual, but seller was unable to demonstrate operation of the soft top. That helped me negotiate the purchase price down but could the battery replacement have impacted something here?
Oh, I doubt that has anything to do with it. I just mentioned it because it was another side effect of replacing the battery. Hopefully, someone will chime in on the soft top question.
If you google 'r129 top reset' and 'r129 window sync' you will find standard procedure to "resynchronize the power windows'. That's a quote from the owner's manual, operations section, soft top subsection. Full sentence starts 'To lower the soft top, first...' (2001 OM, pp147).
'Press ^ side of power window switch until the window is completely closed and hold for an additional 2 seconds. Repeat procedure for each window. The automatic full opening procedure of the windows should now be restored.' (2001 OM, pp117, operations, power windows)
Also, parking brake on...
The soft top down sequence starts by lowering the windows... the soft top up sequence starts by lowering the windows, and ends with raising them. (Opinion) If the computer has no readings for the upper limit of travel, MB must not feel confident about raising and lowering automatically (to include one-button down and locking procedures).

THAT WORKED GREAT FOR ME, similar problem after disconnecting the battery, but it could also be that I interrupted the sequence when opening the top by not letting it finish its cycle of rolling up the windows when the top was stored—rookie mistake. THANKS FOR THE HELP ON THE RESET!!
