Angry SL Exhaust dust on rear bumper & trunk lid

Everytime I drive my SL which is white...there appears after a while a layer of black dust or dirt which i believe comes out of the exhaust...i took this issue to my dealer and they told me it was typical or normal for the car to do it...i just wanted an opinion from you members on the forum that have an SL...do you guys have this happen to yours...

Maybe you are not clearing the burnt carbon in your
engine/pipes. Might want to open her up on the
highway every now and then to clear up the remains.

Exhaust Dust

I can see on a white car it would be more noticeable.
My SL55 does it too.
You can notice it after about 100 Miles.
Get a car duster and spend a few moments.
It comes off clean.

It's really dusty where I live, and I generally dust off the car daily and keep it covered, duster works well, and takes less than 90 seconds to do the whole car. No biggie, a bit **** perhaps, but it really does cut down on washwork.
As such, I've not noticed a particular preponderance of exhaust dust, but it is the nature of all cars to collect dust on the rear like a magnet.

Blazin,

My wife had a 2003 alabaster SL500 which we just traded in on a 2007 SL550 also alabaster. I didn't really notice what I would call exhaust dust. It did collect dirt on the rear though. I use Zaino on both cars and everything is really easy to wash off. In between washes I hit it with a little QD and wipe it off for a just washed look. The white really glows! The thing that I really notice with the Zaino is that the unavoidable black spots on the rocker panels and the rear skirts simply wash right off.

Check my Sig
It's normal...it happens on all of our cars. I just use a duster and dust it off. If you let it build up I'd wash rather than dust.

Thanks for all the feedback, greatly appreciate it. I guess I'll just stick to my weekly car washing routine to keep the dust off haha

I think a lot of it is brake dust, and like others, I just dust off daily when I put to bed at night. Zaino is sure great stuff!

I was thinking of making this same post yesterday. Mine builds up after every couple days of driving. With Iridium silver, it probably is less noticable (one reason I like silver). Guess I need to put a duster in the trunk. Any recommendations?

What I do/use: I used to use the Calif Duster; but discovered these microfibre towels that are by far the best product I have ever used to dust/polish my cars. Make sure you dust from top down doing the bottom 1/4 of the car last and then wash out towel.

The micro fibers are good for wax and poliosh removal but not for dust removal. They will trap the dust paticles in the fibers which in turn scratch.

I used to use the California duster but discovered the OXO duster. It has denser threads and does a much better job than the Cali duster. I swear by micro fibers for waxing and drying the cars after a wash but be careful there are many different grades.

I think the SL is especially susceptible to picking up dust and dirt at the back; drive one in bad weather than the back around the licence plate gets filthy. I guess it's down to the air flow around the car.

Best advice is just to wash the car regularly, lots of hand-hot soapy water to remove the dirt to avoid scratching it.
