What are all the extra button slots for around the shifter?

Why are there so many unused button spots on here and what are they for?

additional switched

In non-USA models some of these are used for additional features--such as interior car motion sensor-refer to the German MB home page for SL description of details------Giff Albright-

Starting top left:

Distronic On/Off
Distronic Distance Adjustment
ESP off
Height adjustment
Motion Sensor Off
Folding Mirrors
Tow-away protection off
ABC Setting
Parktronic Off
Not Used
Aux Heat Ventilation

Looks like this is a lower basic spec car, with no distronic, no motion sensor, no aux heat/ventilation, no folding mirrors. Some of these items are only options in Germany, all US spec cars at least have folding mirrors I believe. This car does have parktronic which is always an option.

The SL350 will have even more blank buttons because it does not have ABC as standard which will remove the ride height adjustment as well. If you remove parktronic as well, there isn't alot left. I think they could have done more to make it look less like it's under-spec'd though.

Sorry, my mistake, I thought it was only an option in Germany.

Blank buttons around shifter

I want to mount my remote indicator for my radar detector on the shift surround-- possible/any harm in (carefully) drilling a wiring hole through one of the button blanks on the left side?
Thanks

Any or all of those options can be added to your car. Here is a picture of C class buttons. As you can see, I have added distronic and stationary heating. The only Euro options for those buttons are Interior Motion Sensor, Power Folding Mirrors and Stationary Heating.

DO NOT drill a hole there. That entire switch assy is one piece with all buttons on it. You'll drill straight through to the circuit board.

Rather than just velcro mounting the remote alert for the radar detector to some place on the dash, with the wires dangling our, I wanted to "install" it; I dont want to use the cigarrette lighter cord adapter. I already used the ashtray space for my XM radio controller. I put a corded access socketr in the console (if I ever need it) but dont want to look rube goldbered with the coiled cord.
I thought maybe those blankbuttons could be replaced if I ever sell. I DO NOT want to drill the wood-travesty!

the blank buttons are NOT available separately. They are part of the entire switch assy.

You would be hard pressed to add folding mirrors switch or no switch.

You added Distronic??? I wasn't aware that it could be done. I had it on my previous SL and really miss it on my current SL.

How did you get it done? How much was the cost? Please tell me more!

Thanks.

Is the interior motion sensor avail on U.S. models? How does it work? If the car is armed (regardless of whether the top is down) if there is motion inside, the alarm will go off?

Folding mirrors are no problem at all. Has been done many times by the right people.
