Can re-program our keyless cards ourselves without visiting the dealer?

I was wondering if we can re-program our keyless cards ourselves, without visiting the dealer.

My 2nd card (with new batteries on) is not working.. A friend told me that I should visit the dealer in order to 'hook up' the car to the MB computer and after some procedure of about 1 hr, the keyless card will be re-tuned with the car's 'transmitting' points (door handles, gear shifter, etc) to become operational again.

No, the keys need to be paired with Star Diag. I'm pretty sure about that.
Similairly I think that's also why ebay keys don't work. Each key has an electronic code that can't be overwritten, also the metal blades are laser cut.

Vraa - Thanks for your reference to the keys, however should I take it that the same applies for the keyless cards? Sorry - my bad - I did not mention that my car is 2003 model where the keyless go was the 'credit card' type and not the post 2004 one (where the keyless go is inside the actual key).

Yeah, I have a 2003 and have the card as well. I believe the same applies to those.

I keep forgeting that after 2003 Mercedes integrated the keyless sensor into the regular keys killing off the cards hence the seperation of the answer.

Just curious....is there anyway we can get rid of the card or even just upgrade our key to the newer transmitter key with keyless go programed to that for our 2003 SL's?

Just for reference, when I took delivery of my car, my
dealer threw in two extra keys, ontop of the two key
cards and one key I had. They were brand new from
the factory in the plastic bags, the details showing
my VIN. The keys were laser cut, and ready to go, but
the remotes were not. They told me I have to take the
remote, put it in the ignition, and click it over to the
acc. on setting, and leave it in the car for 12-18 hours.
The key will pair with the car and its ready to go. Does
this sound right to anyone else? I already have three
keys, so I just put these in the safe as a back up incase
I loose the keys I have.

I was told that the same procedure also applies for my keyless card. Have to insert the actual/remote key in the ignition, turn it to position 1 (i think) - and leave the non-functioning keyless card inside the car for about 12 hours. After that, the keyless card will have paired with the car - so a basic DIY job and no trip to the dealer.

Pleased to hear anyone's experience about this..

Doesn't work. I tried it last night and left it in there for 18 hours. All it did was drain my battery. I tried doing it to a keyless go card.

The dealer told me that is the procedure for programing
a normal key. I am not sure about a keyless go card. I
had them program those for me thru stardiagnostic.
