Extended Warranty

I have an SL that is under factory warranty until the end of July, I am investigating aftermarket warrantys, looked at ICW (inter continental Warranty) 48 mos / 100,000 miles, JM&A Group, and G.E. 3yr/ 36000.
Anyone have any experience, thoughts, most important, advice?

why would you get aftermarket warranty?

get the extended warranty directly from the manufacturer ... all these other companies are going to screw you on any significant repairs and not cover you

Suggestion:
Make a list of the specific components and systems you absolutely must have covered in any ext warranty, then check the details of each warranty policy. Read the details very carefully.
As an example, for SLs and SLKs most folks want the retractable roof system covered, yet most after market ext warranties do not cover it. Same with the SL's COMAND system.
Don't rely upon what the sales agent says; verify it in writing.
You might try calling the warranty claims number and talk to a claims agent and get their name. Ask him/her if a specific component, system, or malfunction is covered, then listen very carefully to the answer.
The ext warranty company may be very reliable and financially solid, but their policy still may not cover the components you need for an SL.
I would recommend calling the finance manager at several M-B dealers anywhere in the nation, and getting a quote from them for an M-B ext warranty; they're negotiable to some extent. They can issue the M-B warranty to you over the phone with a credit card; so you can search nationwide for the best price.
Good hunting!

I would advise buying the one M-B offers, if you decide to get one at all. I think having a Mercedes without a warranty is asking for trouble

Watch out for a maximum claims limitation. I was quoted an aftermarket warranty once that was about $2500, but it had, buried in the print on the back side of the 14 inch long page, that the insurance company would only pay $5,000 total over the life of the contract!

I don't have any experience with those two. Make sure your warranty isn't one that lists what is covered verses what is not covered. These cars are way to complicated to have specific items of coverage listed. Odds are pretty good whatever is your problem will not be on the list.

Mike,
There are recent posts on the 211/210 AMG board regarding the extended warranty issue. I would recomend a DaimlerChrysler warranty from Courtesy Motors in CA. I don't have all the contact info at this time. I had one of thier warranties and I could not say enough good things about it. It paid for itself in the first 6 months. J. Parks was the contact person. If you need additiol info do a search with my user name for previous posts.

Thanks for the reply Glenn, I would love to buy something from Benz, if you can provide contact info it would be great. Last night I met with a F & I guy
at an exotic dealer, and he was trying to sell a policy from J M & A, that is an offshoot of the Jim Moran dealerships, they are the south east importers of all toyota and lexus autos in the south East. not convinced that they would be anywhere as good as a M.B. product, that is really what I want. Don't understand why my dealer at first told me I had the ability to purschase durring the orig. warranty period, and now has changed the story to allow only aftermarket. Thanks for the contact info where you purschased.

Thank you Glenn for the contact info. I followed the link for the factory
contracts, the site spoke only of Chrysler / Jeep vehicles, I will contact them monday to inquire about M.B. It still seems to me that I should be able to obtain the orig. extended M.B. since my car is still under the orig. 4/50, think I will visit my dealer again to find out more info, I would like to avoid at all costs a "service contract", and just extend my factory deal.
Thanks again!!!!

Glenn, great lead, spoke to Lisa @ Chico Motors, the salesman you noted is no longer there. The Damiler Chrysler extended seems the only way to go. Spoke to my M.B. finance guy at the dealer I bought my car at, and all he wanted to do was sell me a G.E. aftermarket, he said that he never heard of it, duh, Damiler Chrysler, the D C extendes out to 7 years from the in-service date, and for as many miles as you want, and best of all you can buy at any time as it is linked to the inservice date. Does anyone have any feedback on the D C product?

I just spoke to my local MB dealer where I bought my car. I
have the opportunity to extend the CPO warranty for another
5 years if I want. I will probably just do two, and then dump
the car. As long as I do it before the existing CPO expires I am
good.

Mike,
One nice thing about the DC warranty is that it is transferable. I don't know if the MB CPO is. I know I got more for my car because of the warranty when I sold it.

SL Warranty

On an aside issue has anyone seen their warranty file held by MB. I understand that it is never seen by anyone outside of MB themselves. It apparently contains all info on the particular car but they do not admit having it.
Has anyone out there seen or laid eyes on theirs?

for info on this question, I went ahead and signed up for the D. C. extended warranty, I went with the 7 / 70 plan, it extends my warranty out to 7 years from the in-service date, and 70,000 total miles, it can be done to 100,000 miles if wanted. My car is still under orig. warranty, so it will be a while until I know how it is. There are a few different prices for the same products depending on where you buy, saved about 700.00 from 1st. quote.
Glenn, thanks for the lead to the D. C. product.

Whats everyones average on the miles and years? I actually just signed on with a Company but waiting to receieve paper work to review it since I still have a 30 Money Back if not satisfied. They gave me 3 Years 36,000 miles with everything covered from suspension, roof, engine, transmission, etc. $2500. No limitations with work being done and other BS that most companies give you. Ill post number and name of the Company once I am certain this is a good and wise move. Ill keep you all posted

$4500 for 3 years of extended warranty coverage? Sounds like a ripoff to me... Could that ever be worth it? Think about it... has anyone here ever spent $4500 in automotive repair bills on their car? Wouldn't it be wiser to put the $4500 in the bank, in 3 years it would grow to about $5000 assuming you needed no repairs... and even if you need repairs that's $5000 you have in the bank... Besides, in 3 years you can use the $5000 as a down payment on your next car.

To spend a grand on a simple repair is the norm with these cars. Price one of your front suspension shock assemblies, computer control modules, comand system replacements and you might change your mind. I've had my extended warranties cover themselves in the first 6 months on other MB's I've owned. It's not just the repair factor, it's also the resale factor. Which car would you buy an 03' with no warranty or one with a full warranty?

I went to the daimlerchrysler warranty and did the quote thing it seemed a little cheap almost sounded too good to be true. The best plan said "if its mechanical then its covered" but that would exclude any electronics. Soooo confusing.

Under my DC warranty I had both the instrument cluster and the radio replaced, no problem.

When getting Extended Warranty what are the common problems and most important things we should ask if its covered? I know to ask about the Retractable Roof, Electrical, Command Unit, what else is there we should be aware of?
