Hello all,

Has anyone on this forum installed an aftermarket exhaust for the 2007 SL550? I have a 07 SL550 with AMG Sport Package. I went to the nearby motorsport shop and they say to install an Eisenmann exhaust but they have to cut out a little bit of the diffuser so it will fit. They say that if I want a Brabus exhaust, I would have to purchase the Brabus bumper as well. Any suggestions, pictures. Thanks for your feedback

I have the very same car as you and I wanted to install the Eisenmann exhaust, which I am familiar with from my previous BMW days, but I found out about having to "trim" the rear bumper and this is something I would like to avoid.

I also do not wish to incur the additional expense and hassle of changing the bumper assembly so unless I find out of a way to do it I guess it will stay stock.

I guess the problem is due to the 83mm dual tips. I would have thought they could have made them slightly smaller, allowing a true "bolt on" replacement for the OEM but it appears that BLING is more important than function nowadays.

Yes, I do not want to trim my bumper. I do experience that as you drive more and more, the exhaust note on the exhaust does get louder and louder, however , upgrading the exhaust to a quad tip would make the car look nicer.

Eisenmann offers a "no bumper cut" exhaust system by using 2 narrower diameter exhaust pipes for each side of the stock SL500/550 bumper.

Wow. Thanks. I looked at the website, they have the 4x83mm, 6x83mm, and the AMG style ones. I guess the 4x83mm works with the stock bumper. I'm going to call them directly to see what they say. Thanks for the info

I sure wouldn't want to have to trim any body panels for exhaust. There must be some way to modify the pipes before they need to exit the body.

I really like the sound of my sl with sport pkg, seems just right when the roofs off, but enclosed yes I wish it were louder, and Yes it seems to be getting louder with age as someone mentioned, not sure if this is merely illusion, wishful thinking on my part perhaps!
Re mods to the exhaust, I worry about negatively effecting the machine since the present exhaust has been engineered and matched with all else, it could impact power or smoothness at certain speeds or mileage or performance at points or carbon buildup (heavens no!), who knows?
When the new pipes are in and sound so cool then you tend to not notice the possible negative effects, if any. It feels faster just bcoz of the booming sound but may actually be slower or add some other quirk!
Its not unusual to loose performance of some sorts with reduced back pressure, since that original pressure is designed into the whole plan for the motor. It may get you a higher top speed but effect quickness, for instance.

If the aftermarket exhaust makers would do a little testing to show performace improvement without any losses that would interest me a lot more. Has anyone asked Mercedes what they think about changing mufflers and exhaust parts, and what might happen to the motor or performance??

i would be nervous on the trimming too.

I did a dyno with my Eisenmann Sport exhaust, and got the following:

Max rwhp: 242.7 hp
Max rwtq: 250 ish

Unfortunately, I didn't do a baseline. Would love to see that compared to a stock SL500.

Sound wise, as you can tell by my video clips, it's a blast.

but rather than starting it up again, cn you tell me how involved your install was? I probably won't keep my car that long, and just wonder how complex the install was. Thanks for any help you can provide.

I would check with your Mercedes dealer first to see if changing the exhaust will void your drivetrain warranty. If warranty coverage is important to you?
