Checked my oil today with the dipstick :)

It's nice that they changed this on the new SL's. I like to be able to use a dipstick to check my oil level versus the computer when I owned a 2003 SL.

Guess its the way I was raised. Want to know if it is using oil or low on oil. Normally with most vehicles I check it every 1000 miles.

Do you think the dipstick is more accurate than the car's computer?

Yes. Plus I love the low tech dipstick.

How are you checking your transmission fluid?

No leaks. I rely on the service at MB to check the fluids. My aftermarket warranty makes me follow the service schedule to the "T", and oil changes every 3k miles.

checking oil

I thought the car would display a message in the dash if it was low on oil. I can only remember seeing it once, think it said 1 qt low. Added it and that was it.

Since this car uses Mobile 1 I figured I would have mine changed every 7-8K miles or once a year, which ever came first. www.bobtheoilguy.com has a bunch of oil experts and they say most syn's will go 10K+ with no problem. Also I read that oil does a better job after its been in a few miles so changing to often can actually be worse then running it over 10K miles. You might check this site out and tell me what you think?

Your right I know 2003-2006 did. I would think 2007-2008 would also even thorugh they have the dip stick.

I put synthetic in the Nisans every 10k miles. You are right the syn's last much longer. But the jokers who I have my warranty through require oil changes every 3k.
