Leather Care:Prevent Cracking!

how to stop appearance of cracks on the leather?

I asked my local car wash to do leather reconditioning when I bought the car, it seems like it will start cracking anyways.

any special stuff that is especially good for SL leather? suggestions?

You want the rejuvinator & pristine clean. The rejuvinator is applied first - it helps "treat" the leather and remove the dirt and contamints (sp?).The pristine clean is then used to remove the dirt that comes to the surface. The stuff works great,I've been using it for 3 years now..love it.I use it twice a year - once in the spring and once in the fall.

do I need to get a specific color combo?

Or the
rejuvinator & pristine clean 32oz for $65 is the standard for all cars?

I've read the whole thread in detailing section of the forum. looks like amazing product!

do i have clear coat that might be eradicated on my SL500 2005 with perforated charcoal leather?

I have had very good success using Griot's Garage leather care and leather rejuvenator. However, if it is too far gone...... it will be tough to get back.

what do you mean? I am afraid leatherique might also too deeply penetrate my leather and it will loose its form. that happened to my toyota land cruiser long time ago. Detail shop did a great job cleaning the seats, but then the seats were deformed and looked terrible. I eventually switched my car to LX470.

I am about to receive my leatherique.
I am planning to do the treatment asap but after reading instructions on the lexus forum I realized I need other tools like special cloths.

Can someone explain to me in details how does the process work and what else I specifically need to buy to make it as easy as possible?

Also, If lets say I do it wrong, what are the possible bad outcomes?

you wont get it wrong as it is very simple if you follow the instruction on the bottle. those cleaner/rejuvenator will only help clean and restore your leather.

also if you worry about using too much and might damage your leather, i would say relax as using too much is just a waste but will not damage anything. hope that helps??

Wink Dealing with Leatherique - TIPS

Having used Leatherique products extensively, I can say that problems CAN occur based on the type of dye used in Leathers. Older cars used a lacquer based dye. For all intents and purposes this is paint. It is not permeable. If you use Leatherique on lacquer-dyed seats it requires many repeated applications because the only place it can be absorbed is through stitching holes and seams. The modern water-based dyes are not as durable, but they breathe and Leatherique works much more quickly. I don't know what was used on older SL's, but I think by the more recent SL500's (2000 and more current at least), environmental regs forced the shift to water-based dyes.

With OLDER SL500's (pre-2000, but possibly earlier - I am not sure) because of the slow absorption, you may have to do as many as 20 applications of Leatherique to get extremely hard, lacquer-dyed seats soft. These applications should ALWAYS be followed by a wipe down with Prestine Clean. We suggest applying the Rejuvenator Oil on as hot a day as possible - AND ! - Covering the seats with black plastic trash bags to slow the evaporation of the oil. I've left it on for days, but not longer than a week.
A DAY or so is the best recommendation.

I have noticed that on severely cracked seats, if you don't do sufficient applications, you will actually hasten the cracking. That happened to several users. The theory is that the rest of the seat is still hard, but you've now softened the leather at the point of the crack. This creates the equivalent of tectonic plates of leather and all the stress is concentrated on the flexible crack which is already a weak area.

Leatherique products are excellent, IMHO, but they have to be used correctly, something not always fully explained in company literature, to work as intended.

If you only remember ONE thing from all of this: APPLY Rejuvenator on AS HOT A DAY AS POSSIBLE !!!!

And the use of Leathertique will at least help your leather hides to remain as pliable and soft as possible.

Happy Thanksgiving to all.

Gobble Gobble.

Applying Leatherique (ie, TEMPERATURES)

"If you only remember ONE thing from all of this: APPLY Rejuvenator on AS HOT A DAY AS POSSIBLE !!!!"

This refers to days when the temperature is AT LEAST 80+ degrees.

Hotter than 80 F would be preferable.

Merry Christmas.
