Engine air filters replacement-SL500
I'm changing the 2 engine air filters on my '05 SL500 and am stumped as to how the center rear catch(s) release the circular clamp over the throttle valve actuator and how the vent hose to the crankcase is disconnected. I've removed both the suction air ducts and the forward engine cover piece and see how the housings disengage from the bulb holders but am unsure as to which way to push or pull on the clamp catch(s) - is this done after or before I lift the housings off the bulb holders? Also, where and how do I disengage the vent hose? e.g. The vent hose appears to have some sort of plastic connector inserted midway the filter housing and the crankcase - is this the disconnect point (pull/twist?) or is the hose pulled out of the crankcase or housing end? I'm concerned I just might break something if I apply force to the wrong parts. Thanks for any help on this...

All you do is remove the front plastic cover, the two plastic air inlet hoses and then lift up on the housing. There are no clips holding it down. Then turn it over and remove the torx screws and the two pieces come apart.

Lee Wireless,
thanks for the reply...you're absolutely right about the removal procedure...apparently, I got unnecessarily confused about "ring catches" and "vent hose" connections after viewing the illustrations in the MB Service CD which dealt with a non-USA variant of the V8 engine the USA variant (Engine Model # 113.963) has none of these extras... the removal and replacement was a snap...

DEFINITELY remove the oil check plug in the back (near firewall). I snapped mine off (albeit it was a tad cool up here in Canada at the time) when repositioning the filter housing....

Mann produce the OEM filters.
K&N don't filter as well as the standard paper filters.
Stick with the oem style paper filters from Mann.
