Extended Warranty
Anyone have an M-B extended warranty on their SL or a good 3rd party extended warranty that includes the retractable roof system?
How much are the ext warranties costing these days?

Did you search the forums first? Searching for "extended warranty" and looking for posts in this forum gave the following:
Might want to check around in the future....

Oops! I agree with your comments about searching before posting, which is something I normally do. It's been quite a while since I've been on this forum, and I quickly scanned thru the 3 pages of thread titles that are currently listed in the SL section. I erroneously presumed the old posts were no longer accessible. Thanks for the links; very helpful.

Sgooter,
Check with your local MB dealer, as they sell aftermarket warranties and they can guide in finding something for the SL. I personally use Millennium Automotive, http://www.themillenniumclub.net/pro...otection-plan/
They have a platinum coverage which covers the retractable motor, the pump mechanism, and other smaller parts. I got mine for around 4K for 100,000 miles or 2012.
The key thing to look out for regardless of whom you choose is the labor rate which the warranty will pay out. Most cap it at $80.00/hr. While MB dealers start at 100.00/hr or more, so the difference can be substantial when you are looking at a large repair. Make sure the warranty you choose agrees to pay to the dealership rate or very close to it.

Thanks djamer,
I last looked into ext warranties several years ago, so I thought I'd check on the current offerings and prices. Your point about labor rate coverage limits is a very important factor to consider. Man, the fine print on these things is really daunting: "We cover absolutely everything on your fine car, except those items that are expensive to repair and replace or that break often."

I just went with his Maximum care plan on my 03 SL55 after seeing lots of other folks on MBworld had already done so. He is a "no pressure" guy. He will just give you the info, answer any questions you might have and take your order if you choose to.
I have a strut that is throwing intermittent codes (ABC warning) as soon as it starts leaking or throwing consistent codes I will have it replaced under the warranty and post how it went.
good luck

Thanks for posting this question sgooter, I was curious about this myself. The search function may or may not prove to be too helpful, considering the way things change. There are always new things coming out in the automotive world.

With Chrysler in bankruptcy and GM going into bankruptcy soon, I would be very cautious before buying either of these extended service plans as they no longer have to honor them once in bankruptcy.

I went with Easycare.Gold Total Care..which is an exclusionary service contract. Price I paid was for 4y/75000 $200 deductible for $3200 in 10 instalments no interest. I thought it was fair and the contract is in force starting on the first payment. . I recommend going to your favorite shop/mb service center and ask them what 3rd party service contracts they have dealt with and which ones are the easiest to deal with.. that will narrow your choices down. Easycare is administered by APCO and they have been very fair with the shop I deal with. the service manager recommended it..Just one break down.. will be worth the premium. My SL is a beautiful car and the engine and tranny are bullet proof but you may get that one car that is a dinger you better of with a little peace of mind..

Another good option is Fidelity. I ended up going with a Fidelity Platinum Warranty. 6yr/60,000 miles with $0 Deductible for $2,363 (2005 SL500 w/ 17,000 miles). It only requires 10% down and then it's 0% for 18 months. A lot of the MB dealers sell this warranty and Audi and VW even use them to underwrite their extended warranties.

I'm sticking my neck out here but...putting price aside, given that MB now offers an extended warranty (as long as it's purchased before the expiration of the original factory warranty) which is, allegedly, a carbon copy of the original factory warranty, why would anyone ever purchase a warranty offered by any other outfit?

For what it's worth, I'm about to purchase the MB ext warranty and, as others have noted, certain states (NJ) collect sales tax on this while others (CO) do not. Also, I found a dealer in Westminster, CO who is not charging the 15% premium for the policy if you did not purchase the ext warranty new with the car.

MB Extended Warranty
Hi, late last summer I purchased a 2005 SL500 with 17,500 miles from a non-MB dealership in San Diego, CA. The car's warranty is just about to expire so I am in the market for an extended warranty. In speaking with the local MB dealership, I was told I am unable to purchase a MB extended warranty since I am not the cars original owner. What the dealership offered was a Fidelity extended warranty plan. I chose the 3 year/ 36,000 mile Platinum plan for $2,067. This is a bumper-to-bumper coverage, zero deductible. The dealership offered 10% off with a cash purchase. I asked the dealership about the 6 year 60,000 mile plan and this cost way more than posted on this site. Given all the things that could possible go wrong with this car, I decided to purchase the plan. I have been assured by the dealer the Fidelity plan is just like the MB extended warranty plan in that I drive the car in and they take care of the rest. As a side note, I hate to have to purchase any insurance plans however, given the high cost for repair and all the electronics on this car I hope I have made a sound decision. Time will tell.
