SL/R230: Is it possible to put SL55 muffler on SL500? Or maybe I can just buy the tips?
I'm new to this board. I found this board is very interesting.
Thinking to get SL 500, and get AMG body package.
Is it possible to install the SL 55 muffler?
Anyone have this experience?
Thanks Guys,
Appreciate it!

If you order the SL500 with the AMG sport package it will come with one exhaust tip on each side. You can then special order the SL55 exhaust and have the rear apron altered to fit the dual exhaust system.
Has anyone done this?

I don't think anyone wants to go through the process of procuring a SL55 bumber, getting it painted (hoping that it matches), purchasing the SL55 exhaust kit, and installation. A job like that could easily set you back several thousand.

AMG chose to stagger the exhaust tips to conform to this curved apron which is actuall very poor exhaust design-the tips are of unequal lengths and actually cause a pitch change to the exhaust tone.
Headers are designed to have every tube the same length, and that is how exhaust should be designed as well at the rear.
I can tell you that there will be a new line of all stainless steel sport exhaust systems available very shortly for almost all Mercedes models, and the SL500 system through 02 will be available in two styles: 1) with a dual left (rear) side outlet only and 2) with a dual outleft left and a dual outlet right. The outlet tubes will be of equal length for optimum tuning.
It is a fully tuned system which bolts on and does not by pass any converters. The right rear apron may have to be slightly cut to match the factory OEM cutout on the left if you opt for the dual, dual system (#2).
These systems represent over 30 years of free flow exhaust system design from a known expert and represent the ultimate in free flow exhaust.
Stay tuned or contact me directly for more information.

P.S.
I am looking for an aftermarket exhaust for my SL.

It will be part of an established lineage of exhaust products that is definitely one to have.
In addition, it will not be as absurdly expensive as those are from Barbus, Lorinser, AMG, and others.
It will be first class quality of 304 stainless, and it will add tremendously to the car's performance.

However, you can expect that by late Fall or eary Spring, the line will be publically announced, and pictures will be abundantly posted.
In addition, a URL to a site listing all the automotive products will be given.
Incentives will be offered to those willing to test out the exhaust for their respective models and who will write an honest review.
No disappointments guaranteed.
All of you who are interested can contact me by e-mail to be put on a notify list.
Has anyone fitted these to their SL500 yet ?

Long Story, I ordered them two months ago from a company called John Welham Auto Design. I found the company selling new items on Ebay, therefore paid using PayPal.
After one month I got an email from German PayPal saying that J W Autodesign was no longer an Ebay Member. After many emails to John Welham Auto Design with no replys, I got Paypal invloved. In fact this week PayPal refunded the money.
The company in Germany 'GAP' says it makes them for Brabus and will accept a direct order on this occassion. I am now slightly unsure as I do not want to spoil the car.
The company has emailed photos of installation process, but not the finshed product. You basically have to make larger cut outs to take the extra width in the AMG bumper.
The German company offers many specialised wooden panels and chrome parts for Mercedes, BMW and Mini. See http://www.gap-germany.com/ and http://www.mp-autodesign.com/ for details.
I will keep you informed. Has anyone else bought a R230 SL55 Quad Tail Pipe ?
Regards,
Philip
The cost is a bit much.

Hanan,
I put a Eisenmann exhaust on my car and I love it ever since. This was the best purchased I made in a long time. The car sounds positively better than a SL55 (SL55 owners do confirm that) and the exhaust looks better than stock.
I posted some pictures and a short sound clip for comparison here:

This is my first post as I am relatively new to this forum. Regarding the SL 55 AMG muffler being installed instead of the SL 500....sure it can be done.
I had it changed last month for my newly arrived SL 500 (2004)(Note that I had to order another AMG back skirt although I had mine ordered with a full AMG package). I also have changed the cluster to an AMG one (That was such a complicated job), changed the taillights to the smoked ones, AMG floor mats and more...
As soon as I learn how to post I'll share some pic of my new toy.
Cheers
yeah its a pain to have to spend all the money on an AMG kit and then have to still change the rear bumper for a new one. btw how difficult was it to install the SL55 tail lights? i heard it can be a task.
