"Close Trunk Lid" but it IS closed!!
I put the car in drive and the dash turns red and displays "Close Trunk Lid". Sometimes it says "Close boot Lid". But the trunk is closed! I can't put the top up because it also says "Close Trunk Lid" when I hit the button to close the roof. Anybody know where the sensor is for the trunk? I'll put my finger on it and close the thing just so it's stuck closed instead of open!

My trunk soft close went out. I have not done the fix yet, but I do get that message. I basically close the trunk as normal. with out the pump to pull it tight, you can tell it is sitting up high. I give it a few firm, but gentle pushes down and it engages enough to keep me from getting the close trunk lid message.

Mine is a bad switch somewhere. The trunk closes, and then pulls down into position (most of the time, sometimes it kicks back up again), but even with complete close mine still says "Close Trunk Lid". It's only a problem when I'm trying to put the top up, otherwise I wouldn't care.

"Close Trunk Lid" after soft close fix
I just finished gluing the ports on my soft close motor per another thread to fix failure to pull down the trunk lid. Now the trunk lid pulls down real solid, but I'm getting the "close trunk lid" warning. I pulled cables from both batteries and jumped + to - for 60 minutes to clear memory, but that didn't solve the problem. Does anybody know where the sensor is?

After SEVERAL trips to the mechanic, and a few THOUSAND dollars of GUESSING at the problem, I finally took my car to a new mechanic and am completely baffled at how the previous people are still in business.
Turns out in my car, perhaps in all our R230's, there is no computer code for "Convertible top pump is not responding/dead" so instead the display picks a random code for the trunk or top. This guy replaced the pump and for a week I have not had any problems whatsoever.

I had the exact same situation. Trunk pulled down tight after repairing leak, but open trunk warning still appeared. What worked for me was (1) opened trunk (2) pulled PSE Pump fuse (3) Closed trunk (4) Unlocked trunk manually with blade key (5) replaced PSE Pump fuse (6) closed trunk.
I have no idea what items in the sequence are necessary. All I know is that I started with just pulling the fuse out and putting it back in and that did not work. Listed above is what I happened to do next and it worked, so - with a try.

When I read your post I was hoping someone would answer where is the switch that controls the "trunk is open". Unfortunately, most responses seem to be soft close option. My -04 Sl500 does not have this and I get the message on occasion. I usually have to close the trunk with a little more force to eliminate the message. So the question remains for me where is the switch. Gene

The failure rate on the soft close is very close to 100%, so while it has the feature, it is very likely that it doesn't work. With the trunk open, turn the latch 1 click closed. At that point, soft close should take over and close the latch completely. If not, your soft close isn't working. After you test, pull the handle to release the latch so it will close normally.

Hello, can some one tell me the part number of this electrical motor ? I had the same problem on my 220d 2019s Benz. And a scheme of the location on it?

2005 SL500
I had the same experience in my 2005 SL500. I eventually went to the MB dealer to replace the locking mechanism (as it had an air leak, I believe). After 17 years, the mechanism needed a replacement.

The soft close on my 2007 SL550 worked since I purchased it 2 years ago but I had to push the trunk almost to the fully closed position get it to take over. During a cold snap (65 deg in FL) I started to get the same red warning and was getting ready to do the excellent repair from this forum. I was always suspicious of having to push so far down for the pulldown and even manually closing the trunk by hand did not turn out the light so before I tore into the trunk lining I turned the 2 large plastic stop bolts in 1/2 turn each. Reset the pull down by removing and reinstalling the fuse. Trunk now works great! It's been over 2 weeks and still going great.
I may still have to do a complete repair in the future but this simple fix is worth a try for anyone having pulldown issues.

2005 R 230 SL350 (M112 3.7). Sold the 1966 W113 230SL recently
Sounds to me like a normal and decent adjustment of your trunk lid. If the trunk lock soft closes, and it keeps doing that for a while, you're set.
I guess the soft close was intended to work with an auto closing trunk lid, really. For the poor lot like myself who have to pull the lid down by hand there isn't much of an advantage, compared to a decent mechanical lock. Although slamming the lid may crack the 3rd stop light. Oh well.
