Instrument Cluster Question

Wondering if there is a way to set a default for what you want to see in the lower section of the speedo/Tach right now it defaults to the total miles on the speedo side and the trip on the tach side I like seeing the digital speed on the tach side is there a way to make that the default so I don't have to change to that every Time I start the car?

No, the R230 was made before the days of the fully user-customizeable instrument clusters. You can choose whether it displays the digital speed or outside temp on the left side, about the odometer. And whatever screen you leave it on (odometer, trip computer, radio, nav, phone, etc) should be remembered between starts. I usually leave mine on the radio display so the up/down buttons change stations.

Mine goes back to the default readouts every time I start it up. Odometer and trip meter on the left, outside temp on the right.

That's odd. Maybe it has something to do with yours being an early model, but my old MY2002 C240 remembered the last used screen.

Ed, do you have an owner's manual? If not, you can download a PDF from mbusa.com. Go here:

there’s a guy in Florida that makes YouTube vids on these. The 2003 SL500 in his vid does that same thing. Odometer and trip meter on the left, outside air temp on the right. I think this is a case where every year does it’s own thing?? The 7:45 mark is what I see every time regardless of what is was on last time running. BTW, the car in the vid is exactly like mine, except it’s not missing the covers for the top hinges. 😁😁

I guess the logic in the early R230 clusters was just different from the newer ones, and even other MBZ cars of the same model year. Oh well! One thing that happens on my 2011 SL is that the transmission mode always reverts back to "C" for comfort after a start. All other MBZ's I've owned have retained the last setting (Sport/Summer or Comfort/Winter). Of course this one has the VGs# "sport shift" with manual mode, so maybe that's a factor.

Well I stand corrected. If I have my digital speedo on, it reverts back to temp the next time out. However, if it's on the radio station, it stays on the radio station next time out. Just tried it.

Ah, so maybe that's the secret - it only stays on the radio screen between starts. Nice catch!

MB has a habit of not explaining al sorts of funnies, built in their cars. I learned about a relation between head light washers action and the windscreen wipers on this forum, for example. Nothing about that in the manual. I’d call that a flaw.

I think that might be a year to year change. My '09 SL550 has the paddle shift option. When you turn it off, on restart it remains in sport, comfort or manual - wherever you left it. I made the outside air temperature to digital speed change soon after I got the car and it has stayed that way, no matter where the display was left when the engine was turned off. On newer MB's, like my '15 S550, it reverts to comfort mode whenever the car is restarted.

Yeah, it could be a year's modification or it could have to do with the TCU or EGS firmware. Mine is a MY2011 with "SL Wheel Package", a.k.a. AMG Sport Package, which (among other things) adds the "M" mode to the transmission and the steering wheel shift paddles. It always reverts to "C" mode when the engine is started. I sued to be a bit annoyed by this, because I always drove my other MBZ's in "Sport" mode and left it there, but the VGS3 shift map is sportier, even in Comfort mode, so I can deal with it.

As for the outside temp vs. digital speed setting, that should be retained - it's been that way "forever" across all models.
