Have an issue where I have installed an after market grill on the wife's SL500 which has the light up star.
I originally had the star wired into the fuse box, drivers side, fuse f10.
Fuse f10 is the headlight fuse.
Well the issue is that the star lights up when the car is started, headlights can be off, on auto, or turned on.
If I turn the headlights off the star stays on until the car is turned off.
I only want the star to come on when the lights are on.
So I figured that I could tap into the headlight wiring harness to solve the issue where the star will only come on when the headlights come on.
I removed the protective wrapping from the harness just a few inches from the headlight connector, I was greeted with several wires.
I am not sure which wire is the power wire for the headlights, I thought it may be the white on, but I am not sure.

The star requires a 12 volt source to work.
Each to their own, but my preference is the complete opposite as I think the large star on Mercedes nowadays is too intrusive, that's why I have a black grille to hide the star ! However beauty is on the eye of the beholder. !
Just by the gauge of the cables I would think the brown is your +12VDC, however you need a schematic to fully know, or you can use a pin and push it in the wire then test with your meter and ground to see if you get +12VDC when you turn on turn on the lights, then seal with tape or superglue. Try looking at the cable colours when you take the back of the headlight cover off.
The grill is installed and completely wired up.
The star only lights up (comes on) when the headlights are on.
All tapped wires and exposed wires have been completely rewrapped/covered to give a factory look to the wiring and to protect the wires.
The wife is very happy with the look of the new grill and her light up star.

Yes it is very nice to have, could not imagine not having it.
In the winter, we normally park the two R230's, my two Harley's and the wife's daily driver Jeep in it.
I do really feel bad for European car enthusiasts and just car owners in general as I understand garages are not the norm.
