2017 AMG WHEELS

When I got down to inspect my tires, I noticed the lettering AMG on the rim. Is that the standard wheel that comes on the car? Thanks.

Sorry, I got you mixed up with someone else, as I thought you had an SL63.

Here are the wheel options for the 2017 SL450 & 550:

So yes, it would appear that the AMG wheels you have are original equipment. Nice!

Does anyone know if this rim comes in a 20" version with a 9.5" width and with offsets that will fit the R231? I have these rims on my car as well and was considering upping the rear wheels to 20s to help fill in the wheel well gap.

I don’t think so, as AlloyWheelsDirect.com does not show it and they usually show all the MB & AMG wheels made over the past few years. That said, it costs nothing to ask them. Take a look here: https://www.alloywheelsdirect.net/me...er_r231_alloys

I was under the impression that these wheels come on the S class in 20". However, the offsets and color may be different. I don't mind having to use a spacer, but I need to find the correct finish.

When you increase the diameter of the wheel it is customary to reduce the height of the tire sidewall by using a lower profile tire resulting in the same overall diameter so you won't actually reduce the gap. If you stay with the same tire profile the overall diameter of your wheel/tire will be greater so your speedometer will be off by a few mph and you might have some tire rub when going over speed bumps.

THANK YOU.... It amazes me the knowledge and information available from members on this board. I see that the AMG wheel was an option and not the standard wheel. The picture showing standard and option was great.... Exactly what I was asking. Thank you.

If you want to keep the OEM wheel design, then you could also just lower the car to close the gap. Otherwise, you'd have to go for aftermarket or actual AMG wheels which were available with the 19" front and 20" rear setup.

Here is a pic of our (dirty) SL with stock 19" AMG wheels, snow tires, lowered and with spacers. Just for reference..

You can but I don't know if it will look good. The finish is the same but beware these wheels were manufactured in several finishes. We had 2 cars with the same wheel design & color (see pics)

Here is the info:
Finish: 7X21 High Sheen with Titanium/Himalaya Grey
S-Class Wheel - Rear: 9.5Jx20 ET38 (p/n A22240105007X21 - A2224010500647X21)
SL Wheel - Rear: 9.5Jx19 ET48 (p/n A21840112007X21)
The rear wheel will extend by 10mm vs the SL wheel which is a good thing and you might pick another 10mm spacer for the rears if lowered.

Hope this helps!

If I can find a matching finish to the front rims, I'd do it in a heartbeat. I think the car would look so much better with 19 fronts and 20 rears. As she sits now, the front tires appear larger than the rears

Does anyone know if the factory 18" wheels for the 450 will fit on the MY 2017 550? I am considering a second set of wheels for winter driving and will get non-runflats. Wonder if 19's are fine with the non run flats vs. 18's I am thinking the ride quality will go up alot and then the 19's will be ok on ride and will be sharper on the steering. Or does it pay to go to the 18's? Do 18's make the car a little rubbery on steering? Anyone done this and have an opinion?

Which is why it was suggested to put 285/35-19 rear (instead of stock's 285/30-19) as the most cost effective option which will definitely reduce the fender to tire gap.

You have a good eye. The front tires are taller than the rear tires...by a slight amount. It drives me crazy, too. When it is time for rear tire replacement, I'll be going with 295s (which are the same diameter as the fronts) instead of the standard 285s.

I haven't done it on an SL, but I went from 18s to 17s on my Mk4 R32 VW and the only difference that I ever noticed was an immediate improvement in ride quality. That was a car with a tight suspension and was known for its steering response, and it lost nothing in that regard with the 17s. The 19s on our SLs are there strictly for cosmetics. For some reason, the industry now seems to believe that buyers of sporty cars will no longer tolerate any more than 2" of tire sidewall. They're wrong at least some of the time. I like to say that the only way I'd ever put 18s on my SL is if 17s won't fit (they will, btw).

Except, since you want to do everything by the book, you are not suppose to mount 295/30-19 tires on (stock's) 9.5" wide wheels - 10" wheels is the minimum industry "acceptable" width (oh and no runflats in that size).

Thank you Dr. Manhattan. Do you know if the 18's (for the 450 SL) will work on the 550? I wonder if the brakes are different so potential issue with fit?

Strange how the markets differ - the 752 alloys were standard on my 400. I'm happy with them as I do not like any of those for the 450.
