SL/R231: Update for MB Maps

I understand what you mean about the "aux" in in the manual. That's why I thought I had a bad or the wrong MI to aux adapter. You, of course, need Bluetooth audio as part of the COMMAND system, but if you do, works fine.
Very pleased. Great advice on the forum, which helped me think it through. For once, I'm completely happy with this new system... and I'm never happy with anything! I'd recommend going for it.
I've got a 2013 SL550 being shipped from Utah (the 2015 SL400 I had for a few days didn't work out). I'd love to add this module to my "new" car. What year is your SL550? Do you happen to have the model number of the Road Top box you used. I did look at their web site, but didn't see any models for the SL, only the SLK.
Thanks

I actually did the reverse of you. Had a 2011 SL550 and traded it for a 2016 SL400, which is what I put the RoadTop unit in.
I also changed the head unit and added three cameras to the 2011 550, which "worked" but never did get the radio functioning worth a crap. Picture attached.
The Road Top Unit I used I got directly from them, but just checked via three browsers to see if I could find my order to give you a part number and couldn't get to their website so I'm wondering if they're still in business. I had emailed them and asked what worked. I "believe" it was the same as the SLK. I think it depends more on the radio model # as different cars use the same version. I'm attaching another picture of mine now. Can't find a model number on the cable seen in the photo but might help.
I did find the email exchange I had with them in January of this year and this might help:Through the original car owner menu page you provided, it has been confirmed that your original car system is NTG 4.7 and is compatible. Please feel free to purchase.
Please select NTG4.5-Black, it is compatible with your original car.

. 42K miles, all the options i wanted, white/tan, and it has been inspected by the local Mercedes dealer so I'm more confident about what I'm getting. It should be shipped next week. I can't wait for it to arrive.Ozzie

My suggestion is to forget the built-in nav and get a decent phone mount so you can use Google maps. Or, go for an upgraded head unit that supports Android auto or Apple carplay. The built-in nav maps cannot even begin to compete with the online maps.

It's not as convenient as using AA, which I do when driving our X5 but it's not bad.
It's now been several years since I installed a box to put Google Maps on the Benz screen. Have not updated their software but don't need to. Google updates the maps constantly.
It occasionally loses connectivity, but then you just "forget it" on the Android and reconnect. No issue.
I find this very convenient because I'll check a trip on Google Maps on a Mac laptop, then "transfer it" to the Andorid, in my case a Google Pixel 8A. When I get in the car, it usually comes up in map mode (if not, you just hold down a button and it comes up), I hit "search", there is the address I found on the computer, choose it and off I go.
This ... after two or three years experience, is WAY better then the Benz maps, which were last updated years ago.
