@Haz1 Good to hear. You might not want to cover the controller in a box as it may overheat. I know the glove box is enclosed as well, so it may not matter.

Good write-up complete with pics. Now, can you use the maps and listen to Sat radio simultaneously?

Mfg's website indicates not possible because both require the AUX input.

Thanks

I have zero issues listening to Sat radio while simultaneously listening/using Apple Maps. I have literally done that a million times...

Ditto. Can listen to satellite radio via the COMMAND system if you subscribe, or via the Andoid Auto/Airplay through the RoadTop. Sirius let's you use an "app" with a subscription, which we have for another car. But yea, can listen to everytihng while having maps showing.
I understand what you mean about the "aux" in in the manual. That's why I thought I had a bad or the wrong MI to aux adapter. You, of course, need Bluetooth audio as part of the COMMAND system, but if you do, works fine.

Folks, quick update. I've had this unit now for about 6 months. Zero issues. No overheating. No nothing. Just works. And I've changed phones and that was easy too. This system is WAY better, to me, then "updating" the factory maps, which are old before you start.
Very pleased. Great advice on the forum, which helped me think it through. For once, I'm completely happy with this new system... and I'm never happy with anything! I'd recommend going for it.

Haz1 --

I've got a 2013 SL550 being shipped from Utah (the 2015 SL400 I had for a few days didn't work out). I'd love to add this module to my "new" car. What year is your SL550? Do you happen to have the model number of the Road Top box you used. I did look at their web site, but didn't see any models for the SL, only the SLK.

Thanks

Read the sticky at the top of the forum. You get the kit based on your COMAND navigation version. You're probably at NTG 4.5 or NTG 4.7.

Ozzie, don't know if it would work.
I actually did the reverse of you. Had a 2011 SL550 and traded it for a 2016 SL400, which is what I put the RoadTop unit in.
I also changed the head unit and added three cameras to the 2011 550, which "worked" but never did get the radio functioning worth a crap. Picture attached.
The Road Top Unit I used I got directly from them, but just checked via three browsers to see if I could find my order to give you a part number and couldn't get to their website so I'm wondering if they're still in business. I had emailed them and asked what worked. I "believe" it was the same as the SLK. I think it depends more on the radio model # as different cars use the same version. I'm attaching another picture of mine now. Can't find a model number on the cable seen in the photo but might help.

I did find the email exchange I had with them in January of this year and this might help:Through the original car owner menu page you provided, it has been confirmed that your original car system is NTG 4.7 and is compatible. Please feel free to purchase.
Please select NTG4.5-Black, it is compatible with your original car.

Haz, Thanks for the info. Your 2016 SL400 and my 2013 SL550 are both R231 cars so I think I'll give it a try. Actually, I think I'll find a pro to install it. I like to drive cars, not work on them. I really wanted to like the SL400, but it had some mechanical "issues" pop-up that the seller didn't disclose so decided to return it and pull the trigger on the SL550. My first Mercedes . 42K miles, all the options i wanted, white/tan, and it has been inspected by the local Mercedes dealer so I'm more confident about what I'm getting. It should be shipped next week. I can't wait for it to arrive.

Sounds like some great wheels. Hope it works out for you. I had the opposite with the 400. Wanted all the old man stuff: adaptive cruise, blind spot, lane keeping. Couldn't be happier. Hope you are as well.

Thanks. I got the same thing. Premium, Sport and Driver assist (adaptive cruise, blind spot, lane keeping) packages, "all the old man stuff" I feel like a kid on Christmas eve.

Just use BenzNija

I used BenzNija and besides doing every single thing I asked for, I’ve made a friend. He is the nicest guy you would ever want to meet. I was scared at first but tbh, he was honest, as the day is long. He is a genius with these cars!!! He writes code like he works for the head of intelligence. Insane that’s all I can say!!! Trust me, the best money I’ve ever spent. I’ll never have to go to the dealer unless I need actual work done. Example. On my CL, Mercedes said I needed to replace my TPM sensors but they were all new. My light kept popping up on the dash. All measured exactly the same, I bought an OBD code reader, all said 100% battery life but had a code, implausible reading. They wanted to replace the entire system. He found that the TPMS had not been set for high and low pressures. The dealership had coded it out when they updated my entire system last year. I stopped driving the car because it drove me nuts. Light is off and everything works

It's convenient to use the built-in nav system, but they're always lacking in map coverage. If you live in a major metropolitan area then you'll probably be okay. I had the same problem with it not showing my neighborhood because it was relatively new. After being there 5 years I thought I would do an update. After the update my neighborhood still wasn't in the map.

My suggestion is to forget the built-in nav and get a decent phone mount so you can use Google maps. Or, go for an upgraded head unit that supports Android auto or Apple carplay. The built-in nav maps cannot even begin to compete with the online maps.

I agree. Updated my mapset with what I was told was the latest available for my car. Very little improvement so now I use my Android phone and Google maps. Bought a phone holder that fits securely in the cup holder. It's not ideal but it works and Google maps is always up to date and provides traffic updates as well.
It's not as convenient as using AA, which I do when driving our X5 but it's not bad.

Google is the way

Agree with the Colonel,
It's now been several years since I installed a box to put Google Maps on the Benz screen. Have not updated their software but don't need to. Google updates the maps constantly.
It occasionally loses connectivity, but then you just "forget it" on the Android and reconnect. No issue.
I find this very convenient because I'll check a trip on Google Maps on a Mac laptop, then "transfer it" to the Andorid, in my case a Google Pixel 8A. When I get in the car, it usually comes up in map mode (if not, you just hold down a button and it comes up), I hit "search", there is the address I found on the computer, choose it and off I go.
This ... after two or three years experience, is WAY better then the Benz maps, which were last updated years ago.
