SL/R232: 2024 AMG GT
The old AMG GT IS an aggressive, sexy beast that has done exceptionally well on the track.
The new AMG GT looks like a watered down compromise version that has gone through one corporate design review too many.
And what really has been achieved? Two useless emergency seats to compete with Porsche? I think Porsche has nothing to worry about.
And then of course is the TESLA treatment of the cabin. What in the world is this giant tablet doing in a sport’s car. The saddest part is the new car maintains all the real estate that the old GT had for instruments and screen. Why oh why did they do this.
I will be very surprised if the new GT will get a huge fan pool.

🫡 Firstly, this is not a traditional AMG GT. I agree with you. 👍
We’ve lost a number of things - rear transaxle + front mid engine layout (gearbox in back/perfect weight distribution), lighter weight, RWD + a higher price tag.
🤷♂️ Clearly this is NOT a direct successor. So what is it instead?
❗️ This shares a nigh identical drivetrain layout to the GT63 4 door — and feels like a 2 door version of that car.
It’s grown to a DB12 sized/weight car (DB12 also 1890 with fluids). This bigger car is now 4Matic+,, and a tonne more luxuries than before: massaging seats, self driving, motor power boot, ambient lighting, 360 cam, head up display, and a rear bench. I’m missing loads.
But did AMG need a focused 911-ish sports car instead?!
❌ I’m not convinced of that - the current line up at AMG has nothing to cater for the V8 performance enthusiast, in terms of a 2 door daily coupe. The S63 coupe is dead, as is the C63 V8, CLS 63 and the list goes on. While a sports car is nice, it likely wouldn’t appeal to many
🤔 To my mind - a more daily AMG GT is much more attractive to the AMG fan as they stand today - and the proof is in the response. ✉️ I have been literally flooded with DMs and emails on how and when to order this car - that hadn’t happened since the GT R was announced!
🔚 Is that the end then? No more track car? Not necessarily- this is just the FIRST GT model. There’s room to drop weight by binning the tonne of luxury that this car gained (massage seats, ambient light, motor powered boot, rear bench etc) and create a track monster. Head of GT product Mathias didn’t give me a flat no, rather was excited for the future.
🥳 Everyone who has told me they want to order so far have not only been “old men with whining wives” as one tuner put it - rather, you’re all ex-GT/ C63/ AMG V8 customers who have finally found a new car to call home. And I’m with you. Let’s just hope it drives the part! 🏁

That said, weight and weight distribution could have been better. This car definitely feels more M8 than 911.
