Question Anyone Know Anything about upcoming 6.9 AMG?

I've been reading voraciously from many new car mags this past week, and I forgot the name of which one, but it was either car & driver, automobile, motor trend, or road and track ... whatever ...

either way the article said that AMG is hard working on the all-new twin-turbo 6.3 liter AMG engines for the S, CL, and SL class .... and that a creme de la creme top top model will be introduced after that with more boost and the engine bored out to about 6.9 liters (6.8 actually, but because of the historic 6.9 name, 69 sounds better, just like the 55 engine is actually 5.4 liters but they called it a 55 anyway because it was right just under 5.5 liters anyway), because Benz believes the 6.9 designation is legendary, historic, and important to the brand. The old 1979 6.9 was important to them. The all-new 6.9 liter will be based off of the 6.3 liter AMG V-8, and will have twin-turbo's. NOW GET THIS: The conservative (and most likely highly artificially restricted to save the transmission) estimate for power on this car will be about 697 horsepower and atleast 886 lb/ft of torque. The way the article read is basically saying that not only does Benz want to market this, but they're already testing these engines for production !!! This will be called the S 69, CL 69, and SL 69. Now if they can strengthen the new 7-speed for these, they will smoke almost anything on the road. By the time they release this engine, they might just wait and put it in the all-new 2009 SL class.
Also, I have been hearing around that Benz wants also another "Ultimate AMG V-12 twin-turbo" model again, and I am hearing that they are therefore working on adding four more cylinders to that "6.9 twin-turbo AMG" model to get a direct-injection DOHC 48-Valve twin-turbo V-12. The designation? What else than bringing back the "7.3" designation. Remember the old 1999 model CL and SL and S 7.3 AMG's ?? With the kind of power the 6.9 liter twin turbo V-8 making, the V-12 should be making atleast 750 or close to 800 horsepower ..... :p :v
ummmmmm.... it goes without saying AMG is not just continuing the horsepower wars .. they are owning it outright. Unless BMW follows through with that 7.2 liter 48-Valve D.I. M-Power V-12 they had developed for a possible M7, or atleast come up with some radical new FI engines, like maybe some high-boost twin-turbo engines for their top line cars ... they will be completely blown out of the water (many would say they already have been in many areas).
Just imagine: An 800 horsepower next-generation SL 73 AMG with newly developed high-strength AMG 7-Speed transmission with SpeedShift and next-generation tires and chassis technology against what? a 500 horsepower M6? LOL that wouldn't even be a race. Against the all-new 2007 997 twin turbo? Once again no contest. Against a gallardo or F430 or all new upcoming F600? No contest. With stock 2005 model CL 65's hitting 0 to 60 all day long on stock tires in mid to high 3's and 1/4 miles in high 11's, then a 7-Speed all-new SL Class with much better tires and trans, and with 750 to 800 horsepower DI twin-turbo V-12 under the hood, they will be hitting 60 in maybe 3 with 1/4 in high 10's easily :v . Even the new upcoming twin-turbo 6.3 V-8 they say will have about 563 horsepower and 664 lb/ft of torque, so even this will beat any M6 or M5, and the 6.9 will have an even easier time, and so on and so forth.

If anybody has any other current and solid info on these upcoming AMG's please post it ... thanks alot.
VelocitE55 actually has already posted some info on these cars.

P.S. -- Since the S, CL, SL, and maybe CLS cars are going to get the FI high-boost engines, does that mean that Benz may just go ahead and let AMG put the 500+ horsepower N/A 6.3 liter V-8 into the CLK, SLK, and C class? a 510 horsepower SLK would be devastating indeed. And what engine will they have for the 2008 or 2009 E-Class? Will they just leave the N/A 6.3 V-8 in it, or do you think they might allow the twin-turbo V-8 to go into the E-Class? The current E55 is already very fast, so putting a twin-turbo V-8 in that car would be mind-blowing for sure.

The new twin-turbo 6l V8 apparently was cancelled, and the new S Class AMG apparently will start with the 'old' 5.5 kompressor engine (either modified a bit or not). We had a little discussion about this in the S-AMG forum. Some people who know something about the subject informed us there. This leads me to beleive the SL facelift AMG will not get the 6.2l engine from the ML63 as well. Perhaps with the new model (which is still years away), but that's just speculation.

it kinda getting pointless, why dont they just take out some weight instead of adding power and having to rely on esp at speeds over 100mph in the dry.... its getting stupid

I don't think they've ever tried to make a (serious) point to begin with

They do have the occasional genuine street-racer; the CLK DTM for example

Unless they also plan to have 4wd or 400+ wide tires in the back, putting even more power then now is utterly pointless.
My S600 would break the traction at 60-70 miles/hour, so this is where most improvement is needed .

Thats what I was thinking as well. With my 65, traction is the biggest issue. Not that I still wouldn't take more HP but I agree it may need something as drastic as all wheel drive to put it to the street.

all u need is reduced torque down low and a little less power AND a lot less weight
4 wheel drive will make the car even heavier and it's handling and braking will suffer

in my opinion this would be the perfect benz:
slk55
weld the roof on
take all the retractable top **** out and some sound deadening material, put lighter wheels and brake rotors
do a few bolt on performance upgrades bring power to about 400-420
put in sport seats and coilovers
there u have it slk55 coupe

That would be a great track car but it would loose all street appeal to me. I like all the crap in the SL that weighs it down and makes it a pig. I got rid of my 355 which was a perfect car to throw around on the track but sucked for everyday use. There are plenty of cars on the market these days that are great track cars in stock form but none of the new benzes fit this bill.

Smile I completely agree that Benz should lighten cars and allow AWD on AMG Cars

I completely agree that Benz should lighten cars and allow AWD on AMG Cars.
For these new upcoming super-powerful cars, they will need to allow wider fenders and put in much wider tires, and allow all wheel drive.

Imagine a 2009 model SL 6.9 AMG V-12 with 800 horsepower, about 500 lbs less than a current SL 65, and much wider tires with AWD ... uhhhh...
that would be scary for sure ... the car would be unstoppable ....

But AMG I guess does not believe in AWD .. the lightening issue they are atleast somewhat trying every now and then by utilizing more exotic light alloys here and there .. but you all are right they need to go further with the weight issue.

But back to the original topic: when these new engines are debuted, and it seems that they will be within the next couple years ..... there might not even be any real viable competition in each respective vehicle class for them to compete against ... they will be in a virtual class of their own .... unless like I said BMW comes out with an M7 and a new M8 and also a new Z8 M-Power with atleast 600 or preferably well over 700 horsepower to even be considered contenders .... once again there was wide speculation and info that the M-Division had already developed and had ready a 720+ horsepower naturally aspirated 7.2 liter 48-Valve DOHC Direct-Injection V-12 for a possible M7, but BMW killed the project. Obviously the M-Division was willing to atleast give these kinds of cars a fighting chance and was willing to atleast try to compete in the super-power luxury car segment.
If Bentley could seriously up the power of the Conti GT, then it might be considered competition to the next generation CL 63 twin-turbo and CL 69 twin turbo. Genaddi Design I believe can up the power quite easily on a Conti GT to 750+ Horsepower. A 6.9 liter twin-turbo CL would still beat it though because it would most likely be a little lighter weight than the Bentley and would have better AMG trans shift patterns and more torque possibly also.
Anyways, that SLK 55 coupe idea was cool ... also imagine the next-gen 2009 model SL in SL 6.9 form or SL 7.3 form with the same mods .... dedicated coupe .. take out all the heavy stuff, carbon seats, carbon brakes, lighter weight chassis and suspension components, ultra-lightweight wheels, next-generation Pirelli tires and carbon body panels ... the sucker's weight would drop in half right there !!!! LOLOLOLOL .... And with all-wheel drive and that kind of engine power ... we're talking a Veyron destroyer here .... :p :v

But like others have said already, people buy a Benz for not just the looks and power but also for all the luxury and high-tech gadgets inside, so doing this to a Benz might put off alot of potential Benz buyers.

yeah, i agree
it really sucks. i love mercedes but they just dont make what im looking 4.
i took my car for a 20 min canyon run and it was smoking from everywhere. brakes, diff, powersteering fluid spilled all over the headers and started to smoke. these cars are just 2 heavy.
my e36 m3 was the perfect compromise 3200lbs with enough luxury for every day use. and i could drive it for 45 min straight in the canyons w/ no problems, the brakes would glow red and still hauled it down w/ relative ease. all it needed was around 350-400 n/a hp. the new m3 (my brother has 1) gained 90+ hp and also picked up about
300 lbs

4wd would not necessarily increase the weight that much, S500 4matic,Lambos and Porsches are good examples.
It's all a matter of engineering and packaging.
Any loss of handling balance and larger (slightly) weight would be offset by much needed traction.

But a 4WD roadster convertible (SL)? That's like blasphemy.

Thats what the 996 tt cab is,isn't it?
Besides,in the SL you could get away with a really good LSD and much more aggressive footwear then the puny one currently supplied by MB.

Spoke to Rob Allen at the AMG challenge. AMG 4matic is definitely something they want to do.

I agree with some others. All this HP is stupid unless they can build a chasis to handle it. Wouldn't it be nice to someday read a review that has MB kicking M's *** in the "twisties" as well as the dragstrip LOL

I guess so. But the 911 tt is not a roadster convertible is it? Technically it's a convertable (like the CLK).

Well, both are for sale for the interested. AMG, and I believe Kleemann offer an LSD. Aggressive footwear everywhere.

An S55/65/69/73/... with 4matic on the other hand
