When will SL65 depreciate?

When do you think SL65 will be around 100-120 gs?

Or which of the 65 series will be first to take a dive?

The CL and S seem to be taking the biggest hits right now but the SL is not far behind.

At auction an SL went through at 129 in Dec. At dealerships they still seem to be around 160K.

I just got a quote from the dealer on a new ' 06 CL65 at $140,000. The general manager admitted that the CL65 is difficult to move.

They really have been coming down a bit and for what you get are worth every penny over a similarly priced "new" 600 or 55. That said I think some cars are unusually cheap because they have been thrashed a bit. I looked at a few before I bought mine and like anything else some weren't taken care of all that well. I still love the car and my only gripe is that MB didn't differentiate it more from the SL line and make it more of a special looking car to match the performance. (this may be just me).

The good news is that due to owners demographics, you can count on most of these "used" cars being well taken care of... regardless of the mileage.

I would have to dis-agree on that one. I have seen two of them that were seriously abused.

Also most don't have their diff fluid changed as required at 1000 miles.

One I looked at with 3K miles had such a loud wine from the LSD that it hurt my ears.

It would appear that many have had a life that did not include any kind of proper break in or maint.....

Sad really, it is a fantastic car!

Wow you really popped my bubble. This was a new '06 with 15 miles on it. The window sticker was slightly above $185,000 and the invoice a tad over $174,000. They are willing to sell at $34,000 below invoice. I am seeing used '05's for about the same price.

I'd guess the average buyer is over 45 years old so it's hard to believe that the majority of these cars are run hard or not well taken care of... Though the last time I was on the lot here in SoCal (Fletcher Jones) they had 4 used SL65's... all cream puffs... though one painted in camoflage (the owner/founder of Oakley) - so I guess that would count as abused by default!

I think that MBUSA had about a $35-40K mark-up in the MSRP on these puppies -- and now that they appear to be not flying off the lots, I wouldn't be surprised if you could hard-bargain one down quite a bit if it's wintertime and the car has been sitting in a guy's inventory for awhile...I'd consider taking a week or two to look around and see what's out there new on the ground that you may be able to get a real-steal-deal on....

No longer car shopping...
To original poster...

I can tell you exactly WHEN these things will depreciate.....

As soon as they are driven off the lot. The only question really is.... "How MUCH will it depreciate". Looks like the SL's are startign to take similar hits the CL and CLKs did a year ago. Based on the above refernces, that value appears to be about $30K (Ouch!)

There is definetly not $35-40k profit in these cars. The normal margin is 7% and then you have holdback which I believe is 3%, plus maybe some trunk money. The dealers are selling these cars for $35-40k off sticker because they are sitting on the lot for months at end, it doesnt help overall dealer margins when you are paying floor plan costs on $180k cars. they are just cutting there losses.

........I may be dreaming, but I see these cars selling for under $100K as soon as the new CL and S65's are out and the face lifted SL65 is out. MB made a big mistake pricing these cars in ferrari and lambo and Aston Martin territory just before announcing they will be changing the body style. I think that is why the new 65's are being introduced early in the life cycle of the W221 chasis.

I don't think the AMG version of the 12 cylinder TT engine was ready to introduce into those models at an earlier stage in their lifecycle.

i think the germans sat around the boardrooms, and just thought.. hey, these dumb americans spend $2000 for a suit, so why not double charge for a little bigger engine.. "people will pay for the exclusivity.."

I can see maybe $149k "fully loaded", but with all the options, sales tax/reg/gas guzzler, we're looking at not being able to get into a "basic" one at a penny under $200k.. $100k is one pricepoint, but not many people in the world have $230k (fully loaded) to spend on a ridicously fast toy... we're into ferarri/lambo territory with this.. and a car company should expect a very limited few to be interested in jumping on them... considering lesser priced options are available for 1/2 the price with just a smaller engine..

I thought that they should have come in at $150K to $160K, and that the fact that I was seeing them priced at $165K to $185K was going to kill them...perhaps it has..... Happy Hunting, boys!
