3. The last picture is of our clean up building packed full of sold cars to avoid any potential hail damage. There have been numerous storms coming through Indiana with hail the size of golf ***** and tennis ***** that have caused a ton of damage. A 2007 S550 came in yesterday after being caught in a hail storm and it is completly ruined. Hail was falling at 100 mph+ and went right through the panorama roof, cracked the windshield, and hood, roof, trunk lid and doors are all dented. The car only has 750 miles and the person wrote a check for the car...

Ahh....Mercedes, Mercedes.........look at them huddling in the garage....
The SL55 is gorgeous and the changes really are subtle but they really make the car perfect. The SL is likely Mercedes best car arguably with the new S and upcoming CL.
I wonder if Mercedes is using thinner sheetmetal nowadays because there was a time that a Mercedes would laugh at hail damage (along with Volvos) while all the other cars caught in the same storm were badly damaged.

Maybe I am the only one but I think this AMG is one of the least facelifted Mercedes' I have seen in recent times.
Certainly a great car, but nothing major that would be much better than, let's say, an '05/06.
Don't get me wrong, everthing done to the car has been an improvement albeit really small ones. Most notable are the 17hp more power and better ABC/brake tuning/software. The front bumper looks really nice, but so did the old one. I personally don't care for the carbon (I like the wood) and better looking paddles don't make for better shifting.
At least on the SL550 you get a substantially better engine.
What do you think?

Yeah you do have a point there, but hopefully all the little under the skin changes will result in a much more reliable car. I think that is the main goal at facelift time, but you're right the SL550 gets the more significant engine updgrade. Really with 382hp the SL550 really makes the other SL models a little pointless to a lot of buyers since 382hp is more than anyone needs. That said I'd still take a SL55 or SL65!!!!

Wolfman, I have to agree with you. Speaking of AMG, in recent years (5 yrs or so) other than SL-R230, only C-W203, CL-W215 and S-W220 that have gone through facelift models. W203 AMG facelift had undergone the biggest modifications i.e:
the whole CLK front end, quad exhaust, different engine, and a total redesign of the interior. W220 AMG with its headlights, tail lights, exhaust, supercharged engine, etc. The same case with facelifted W215. Other classes are due very soon, so we'll see. I wish AMG would take a more serious approach on making their cars look more distinctive than the non AMGs. I’m just talking about exterior appearance. All this time they only employ different bolt-on parts which are easily interchangeable, like front spoiler, exhaust and side skirts. Take a look at BMW, you can tell the difference between a stock M and a stock non-M from a distance, due to their fender flare, fender slats and stance. Maybe this is a part of MB marketing strategy ? Or maybe this is more like a cost-driven issue ?

I like those paddles. I wonder if those can be swapped out for the cheesy buttons I have on the 65. Also love the carbon fiber but since that was a special edition option on mine its not too cool that it is now available on all. I agree with others though, the AMG cars (at least the SL65 to me) should get different body treatment to further differentiate it from the rest of the line up. That extra money should buy you more than it does.

I thought they only changed the front bumper for the sl55? the whole kit?

I think AMG has done an excellent job with the modifications and subtle changes. The pictures do the car no justice considering the resolution sucks from my phone. If you were to see this car in person, I am sure you would like it a lot more than you do just from looking at the pictures. The side skirts have changed along with the rear and front bumpers. These changes are sweet along with the wheels and the interior. On the other hand, the engine is still sweet. The paddle shifters are even cooler. When you put both hands on the steering wheel and wrap your fingers around the shifters, you feel like money with a lot of hp. Also, you are forgetting about the lap timer on the dash. I think that the so called minor changes do the car a lot of good. The second I saw the car I said "Wow", kind of like when I see any AMG or Mercedes. Dont get me wrong, your views are taken.

I always wondered why AMG didn't give their cars bigger fenders like the old Porsche-built E500 from the W124 E-Class era. That would go a long way towards making the AMG cars "more special". Even the 2000-2004 Audi A6 had larger fender flares on the V8 model. Not talking about the S-Class type wheel "arch" either I mean the where the actual fender is just in the same shape as the normal ones, but widers like on the 500E/E500 from 1992-1994, that car was gorgeous and instantly recognizable because of those fenders and wider stance.
