I can't say anything about the SL55, but the SL65 is well engineered and built. Performance is pretty incredible. I like the sound of the 55 better though, sounds much more like a muscle car.

I have had my SL55 for about 2 1/2 years and have thoroughly enjoyed it. It is a great cruiser, has more than enough power even though I modded the engine and has been areal joy to own. For a 2 seater it is comfortable and rock solid. As someone else said here the sound at full throttle is perhaps the best on any current Benz. As far as reliability is concerned I had one small oil leak and an air conditioning switch that had to be corrected. Of the AMG's that I own this is the best of the bunch.

I have had my SL55 for 4.5 years and it is one of the best cars that I have owed. It is fast, handles great and has a sound to die for!! .....and it isn't hard on the eyes either!

....and has been spot on reliable, except for an IC pump and a battery. No rattles, no shakes, just miles of smiles.

It is a very well done effort.

Drove an SL55 once a week for about 2 years. Perfect blend of style, attitude, comfort, luxury, and technology. Its a convertible with a hard top. The torque of the engine is really enjoyable. Its great as a daily driver and as a fun car. Competitors are the Cadillac XLR-V, Jaguar XKR, and BMW M6 (debatable). It really is in a league of its own though.

As far as reliability has gone...the car shut off twice while on i95 travelling at about 70mph. Just randomly shut off, Mercedes said it was an electrical problem. The power steering broke. The car rattled like you wouldn't believe. If you tried to do a back to back 1/4 mile run or punched it a few times on the highway the supercharger would shut off. The convertible roof when closed would sometimes not be able to close all the way and I'd get a malfunction. When making a really tight turn or drifting, the roll bar pops up even with the top up. Other than that, great car lol.

If the car didn't have those issues, it is amazing. However, I had to show you both sides of the story.

I'm impressed by the guys that responded so courteously, my gut level response to your "dont insult my intelligence" was much less courteous.

I have had mine for 13 months as the second owner.
Car has been flawless. I would suggest getting at least a model
year 05. It seems most of the electrical bugs are worked out.
A couple times my Stereo hibernates. Just restart and fine.
My top is tight and nice. Roads here in South Orange county are
in great shape. Brake pads and tires every 15K miles.
I drive mine on the weekends and its always a pleasure
to pull it out and enjoy it for the weekend.
On a 1 to 100. I would give it a 95. The only ***** is the brake dust
and watching not to kill the front end when parking. Thats with all SL`s.
Love the AMG exhaust sound. Sounds better than a 65 IMHO.
Always lots of looks. I feel its safe and very dependable.

So go shop your brains out. Lots of test drives. Get a single owner off lease
2005 or 2006. Enjoy !!!!!

That's my favourite feature. I don't like soft-top convertibles (I always have the impression of owning 50% of a car) and having a hard-top puts the SL in a class of its own...or does anybody know a comparable car (hardtop PLUS top-performance)? I don't...

Caddy XLR-V...but tha car is only good if you want an SL type roadster with a supercharged V8 and you're on a tight budget. The SL55 is the real deal.

Also, I forgot to mention my SL55 was an '05 and was used in all sorts of conditions (NY means extreme heat and extreme cold).

This is an odd post. I am willing to bet that you are 14. Anyone want to go over/under?

For him to know what a 318i is, he must be in the 15-16 range.

Hey - Thanks for feedback

Hey Guys,

Thanks for the feedback, sounds like an awesome car, new shape is due out soon though isnt it ?? Is it worth waiting for the update ??
Do you get rattles from the roof ?? Like of rag top's or not ?? SLK i once owned did suffer from this, slightly ruined the driving experience!

I agree, if i said 318, i would be 14, but your correct, as i knew the 318is model, i gotta be 16+ right !!

Lets not make it personal, lets keep to helping me purchase a sl55 ??

Thanks

Wow, I didn't see his list of cars...

Ok, well since you have top of the line performance cars like the F430, Pagani Zonda, and 911 Turbo S (I didn't know they made an '07 Turbo S), then do you even need an SL? You're better off going for a Bentley Continental GTC to tell you the truth, good enough performance and higher prestige and better interior than the SL55. Especially since you aready have 2 Mercedes including a 2007 S320 (which they stopped making in '06).

...once again, a complete waste of a thread.

What the hell are you talking about that porsche don't make a 2007 911 turbo S Tip, are you crazy, they do, i own 1 ?? Its a turbo tiptronic S with sports chrono and carbon ceramic brake option !!
Also a S320 CDI 2007, they stopped making this in 2006, no they didnt, I own a 2007 S320 CDI?? I may not be able to fit CDI, in the space provided on my membership page, but either way they make a S320 CDI albeit!!

Please dont start trying to pick holes in my car collection, as if I don't know what car's I own ??

Finally, they may be some confusion, as i notice with US members, they refer to new car's as 2008 models ?? How is this, we are only in 2007 ?? In the UK new car's are refered to as 2007 ??

Perhaps this may have confused you!!

Sl65 ??

Hi,

To be honest I will look at buying a used SL AMG, as new as I can find, the only reason for this is to beat the waiting list !

Finding a used SL65 in the UK, isnt an easy feat! Hence was interested in the more common SL55, more chance of finding 1, and a good 1 at that !

My local dealer quoted a 6 month wait on a new SL AMG, which put me off.

Waaaaahhhh! I think you may be wrong there. I know a lot about Pcars. I could be wrong but I swear that Hotwheels is making a turbo S. 1/32 scale?

Waaaaa. Taking my GT3 RS to autox again tomorrow. Sure hope I don't run into a 997TT S in my run group. Gotta cut down on my drugs if I see one there.

I will post some pics from tomorrow.

Wow, some nice cars in your sig c32AMGUK. Adding an SL 55 AMG? Why not buy one, and write it off when the new model comes out in 6 months?

Mind asking what do you do for a living? - A Managing Director at some investment bank? A trader in the City? Or do you happen to trade DAX futures and your first name is Paul?

Nice cars, anyway. We used to have a member here who was a true globetrotter also, although he was stuck in the boonies for the time being. He was about to order two Bugatti Veyrons (or three, I lost count). He was also buying a few SLR's. Now he has been so busy driving them on all continents that he doesn't even want to share any pics with us at this forum. Maybe it's up to his PA to post pics for him. I don't know.
