Anybody here without the speed limiter? If so, what's the highest speed you've driven or have heard?

I did 190 MPH (306 Km/h) once in my SL55. I would have gone faster but other traffic prevented that.

Think you could've hit at least 200 mph or 325 km?

No idea. I was too busy driving otherwise I would have checked the RPM meter to see if there was anything left. Will try some other day.

I have been 202 in the SL55. It was so easy, it was silly. I even reached down and turned on the seat massager for effect!

I have done the double ton in several cars, but the SL was by far the easiest.

But according to your signature, your SL AMG has 550 horses and torque?

It's not stock as of I've heard before. I forgot to mention; completedly stock SL55 AMG with 493 horsespower and 516 ft lb torque or the current 2008 version with 510 horses and 531 ft lb torque.

Your right. Dino's sl55 has what I must say is the BEST ECU mod I have experienced. I say this first hand. I just got my ecu back on my 2004 sl55. Got the tuning at VELOCE PERFORMANCE!. Their ecu tuning is amazing. Could not believe it. I have a friend with 05 sl55 renntech tune/pulley. My ecu tune alone without a pulley outperforms his. Tried and proved this weekend. I have had tuning mods on my sl600 and my 996tt and I must say This is the best ecu by far. I got my sl55 up to 188 this weekend with plenty left. If it wasn't for someone's dog in the road I was definately hitting 200+ without problems. And it shall be done. Having rennntech headers/lowering module done this week. I am hopefully going to get it Dyno'd while they are at it.

A+++++ to Veloce Performance and Dino for their ecu tuning. You have definately got something special there. Had no heat issues this weekend either. I will start another thread with more details soon.

Thanks for the props. Try not to take out too many of the neighbor's pets....they tend to get upset.

Since my car's gearbox is stock, the car is limited by the gearing. When I saw 202, it was around 6500rpm. I also remember an '03 issue of Autocar that Vmax'd an SL55 at 202. My car may have just gotten there a bit quicker, but the end result was the same.

Damn cheapo 5 speeds... I mean... BMW has a 7 Gear Sequential Manaul Gearbox! The best of the best!

Mercedes AMG has a big disadvantage right here.... but they got way more power and torque than BMWs..

The 63's use the 7g and still have more torque then the BMW V10. I've also read more negative SMG reviews then I can count...

I still love the M5/M6...just sayin.

True...

But guess which one shifts way faster and has a higher maxed out redline RPM?

I know, hence...

It's a trade off, not a question of engineering. The SL is more comfort oriented. The bimmers have tighter steering and harsher ride quality, much less torque but higher red line and faster gear changes.

They are not trying to be the same thing...

You have best of both worlds, whats wrong with that?

I did 315 km/h 196 MPH and it wasn’t the max... So 200 is easy to do! But you have to remove the (AMG) 300 km/h limiter as well!

With the regular removed limiter the car will run 308 km/h on the speedo!

The German car magazine Auto Motor und Sport have tested it on 325 km/h with GPS equipment.

Thats true, but please remember that my car is heavyly modified.

Before it was modified i ran once 310 km/h. My car is one of the early ones, with 520 hp., before they were detuned by AMG.

Yeah.... I heard about AMG making 520 horses for the SL55 back in 2003.

Thing is, I got my delivery of my SL55 AMG on like New Year's Eve of 2003. On December 31st. Just one day before New Years...

Would my SL55 have 520 horses too (was one of the very first people in the USA to get an SL55) or would actually be detuned at 476 horses? (Really old SL55s had 476 horses before it was bumped back up standard to 493).

You can actually tell by the diameter of the TB. On the 520 Hp models the TB is 80 mm. The 476 Hp are only 76 mm. So AMG actually choked the kompressor.

Excuse my ignorance...

but how do you check the "TB" for whether it's 80 or 76 mm? Thanks!

Easy done, You take of the rubber Y on the intake of the Kompressor, and you then messure the inside diameter with a long leg caliber.
