Interesting....
Yesterday i saw an SL at a gas station and asked the guy what model it was. He said it was a SL55 AMG prototype. I thought that the SL55AMG was out already....Anyways... He had a clip board in his hands taking notes. The rims wern't AMG, but the plates said "distributor" on it. It was also debadged. He popped open the hood and it was definately an AMG. The interesting part is that he said once he's done testing it, MB will destroy the car. Cant imagine something so beautiful get purposely crushed.
He also said that he recently saw the Twin Turbo engine for the S-class. Interesting......

Where did you see it? There is a place off of Cherry Ave. north of Market that does a lot of testing for various auto manufacturers. I routinely see new/prototype cars around there.
On a side note, I saw a Lorinser CL600 on the freeway by Anaheim Staduim after the parade last week, what a sweet ride that is!

It could have been an SL with and SLR engine used just for engine testing. Or it could have had something else different and this is why he called it a prototype. This might also explain why it would be destroyed after the test.

He said they would destroy it because selling it might cause problems due to mechanics not knowing how to fix the engine since parts might be changed AND if the car gets into an accident they can blame the engine for being disfunctional.
The plates on this car had four small numbers with a small word "distributor" on it.
