The character of the cars are going to be very different.

The SL63 is going to be geared for overall performance, and strikes a balance between acceleration and handling. It also has that very trick 7 speed gearbox. In other words it is a very balanced package.

The 600 is still going to be set up for more of a 'softer' attitude. The engine is a beast, but I believe overwhelms the rest of the package. It is an extremely tunable engine, that we routinely get 600+ hp out of.

So, if all you want is straight line speed, the 600 won't disappoint. But if you want more of a performance package, the SL63 would be a better choice.

SL63 AMG V8 0-60: 4.7 seconds
SL600 V12 0-60: 4.4 seconds

However, with the race start function and shift modes I have faith that the 63 could take the 600 in a straight line. The 63 will also handle better especially with the AMG Performance Package, and it also looks better the AMG styling and rear diffuser. Although I used to own a SL600, I feel likes its lost in the crowd between the then SL55 and SL500, and now the SL63 and SL550. The SL600 also only amounts to about 3% of SL sales.

Quote: SL63 AMG V8 0-60: 4.7 seconds

Is that an official number from MB?

The 08 SL55 lists as...

0-60 mph in 4.4 seconds

I believe reading on mercedes-amg.com on the SL63 AMG page the performance specs saying 4.7 seconds. I'm on my iPhone, so do me and favor and go to mercedes-amg.com > view the SL63 AMG and check it out! Thanks, don't want to be spreading wrong info!

I saw a C&D review of the sl600 back in 05 i think and 0-60 was 3.5 seconds and the quarter mile was 11.5 if memory serves right. So the new one should be just as fast.

Pick the '08 600 with Renntech ECU/TCU modification. Much faster. Stock 600 is faster than SL63.

I would drive the '09, but I'd have to wear a bag over my head.

But then the goofy Airscarf would probably blow it off or set it on fire.

Probably should be a Nomex bag.

Most people think this was a modded car, some speculate it was modded by Renntech.

Faster car is the 600 - no doubt although Mercedes officially tends to rate them at the same 0-60 time (for 08, that was 4.4 secs.).

However, I'd pick the 63 because it looks MUCH better IMO.

Can do. Mercedes-AMG says 0-100 KM (0-62 MPH) in 4.6 seconds:
The SL 63 AMG accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.6 seconds before quickly going on to a top speed of 250 km/h (electronically limited).

Yep, much discussed. There are good reasons to suspect that C&D wound up testing a modded car and no one has yet matched the C&D 1/4 mile time with a stock SL600.

That said, the SL600 is trivially easy to turn into a sub-12 second 1/4 mile car.

With performance package, the SL63 would end up costing more than the SL600, but would be much more hardcore, whereas with the SL600, you might as well be driving the S class sedan. SL63 has been observed to lack the grunt of the old 55 in reviews. Remember here that the old 55 was well short the grunt of the 600 back in the day, so you put two and two together. I drive an 07 600, same engine as the 09s, and let me tell you, I would be hardpressed to get used to less torque on an SL.

The 600's power varies a lot on specific cars from the manufacturer's claims, usually on the plus side. That means, your 600 could easily have the equivalent of 550 horses on the crank. Such freakishness may have accounted for the Car and Driver episode.

Well SL600 is much faster than SL55, so isn't it obvious that it will be the same case with new models? 63 cars have not been faster than the 55 cars they replaced, and in some cases, even slower. Why should it this be any different with the SL?
