Drag wheel question

I've got a set of MT ET streets sitting in my garage on some 16 inch wheels. I tried fitting them on an E55 a while back, but obviously ran into brake caliper issues. Now I can't recall if the caliper was to tall or to thick. If its to think I'll just get a spacer and some longer lugs.

Should I try to do that? Or seek out a tire that fits the SL OEM wheel? I would love to run a 17x10 wheel with a 305 back there. But finding those wheels is next to impossible. I'm sure CCW can come up with something, However I'd lik to try to use what I have. My old lady would flip the F out if I put another set of wheels and tires in the garage. Thats a headache I just don't need.

One thing is for sure, we need a sticky thread in this SL forum for what guys are running in the back at the track. As this question pops up all the time.

I'm running a Rial Nagaro wheel (18X8.5) with a 265 Mickey out back and have had success with it. No clearance issues, it bolts right up.

That said, I know Sean (thericker) is running a 16" CLK wheel on his SL600. I'm guessing he's running a spacer, but ping him directly to confirm. I also believe Sal (URNext) was also running a 16" CLK wheel for his record setting run.

My setup:

When you shopped at Tire Rack what car did you search under?

Mike, I think my particular wheel has been discontinued. I bought the whole setup, from someone that purchased it for his CL65, never used it, then sold it to another member for his E63. He never used it either, so I got it via PM on here, when he saw that I was looking.

I ran 275/40R17 Hoosiers on 17" Rial Nogaro wheels with a 15mm spacer: https://mbworld.org/forums/wheels-ti...mg-brakes.html

It was an effective setup.

Mike:

I was the original owner of BOR's drag wheel set up. I bought it for my CL65. When I bought the wheels from Tire Rack I used a CL600 as my search vehicle. The thing with Tire Rack is that when you search for wheels they look at front and rear clearances. We only need to concern ourselves with rear clearances when looking for a drag wheel. I am not sure you will find anything under an 18" wheel on Tire Rack even if you search using an SL500 as your vehicle because they will be looking at the front clearance. Otherwise, you will have to try test fitting 17" or smaller...

something to consider mike. the crossfire guys have had a spacer made to mate a corvette rim to the hub of the car. this way they could use the vette rim with a 315 tire on it. the set has been used with good results

One thing is for sure, I hate shopping for wheels. are you guys using larger lugs with the spacers?. I put an Email out to HRE about there 17 and 18" comp wheels. I would love to get set of 17x10's drag wheel.

I had a set of the cheep wheels on my C55. I scored them for $89 on tire rack. Problem was, after I smoked my first set of tires. We found that the run out that was once in spec was now way out of spec. Im not against a cheap set of wheels for strip use, but At this point in my life I kind of have a want for a fat rear tire back there. Might be wishful thinking or over kill, but it would be cool.

I guess I could just buy new cheap wheels if something like that happens again and still be under what a custom set would cost.

How thick is the spacer? Being able to fit vette wheels would allow a much bigger aftermarket? Weld wheels = drool

Bogart makes a light 17" wheel that will fit. I just took Treynor's set off his hands. New they are kind of pricey, though.

UPDATE:
I decided to just use my stock wheels. I just don't have the garage space after Rich from Dyno-Comp made me take home my 16 inch drag wheels, SL55 OEM's and my ladies OEM wheels. Its either my girl parks in the driveway. (I'm sure that will go over well when I tell here she lost her parking spot because I needed more room for an other set of wheels.) I park int he driveway (LOL to that) Or I just use my stock SL wheels and toss some DR on them.

Having tried the Hoosiers, Mickey T's, on my old C55 (BTW I was faster with MT's) I have decided to give another brand a shot. So I opted for the BFG G-Force T/A drag radials. 295x35x18. I hope they don't suck. reviews online seem positive.

In all honesty I can't believe I went with a tire other than MT's They work really well. The price was good at $240 a tire. So what the Hell? I'll give them a try.

In the end, at least we can get a review of them on a Benz
