sl55 amg, funny
wanna hear something funny? the new sl55 amg will top out over 200 mph...but there are not current street tires (race tires are available) that will support a 4400lb car going 200+mph

they are...but for $1500 or so u can get amg to set the limiter to 186 mph...which are maximum speed for y-rated tires. if u're crazy and u've got the means and the place, u could top out over 200 mph with racing tires.

The testing (reported earlier on this forum) in which the SL55 was maxed out at just over 200 mph also had to be undertaken at a track designed to minimize tire destabilizing forces.
They were very careful to coddle the vehicle as much as possible, and anyone who removes the speed governor chip must be very careful with this vehicle up over 150 mph. It is remarkably heavy.

hee hee
Of all the vehicles (cars), I'd be careful in over 150 mph, this would have to be one the least.....whats better in a crash, an sl or a ferrrari? all that aside, any car, over 35 mph, be careful!!! those "Staying alive" ads with the crash test dummies....35mph!

You're missing the point.
The SL55 is a REALLY heavy vehicle.
Tire stress at those speeds is tremendous.
Compare curb weights:
Ferrari 360 Modena: 3064 lbs
Porsche 911 C2: 2900 lbs.
SL55: well over 4000 lbs.

you are absolutely correct in the weight side of the arguement, but even with the 186 mph chip, anybody that has got an sl would have on at least y rated tires able to withstand the weght. And how long 186 mph can be maintained, even on a race track, with turns and curves would not be long enough a duration to produce the type of heat to tear the rubbers off. as for psi's, as long as the tires qualify for the load...and, except for firestones , tire ratings are consevatively rated by an industry standard 20%.
a tire rated for up to 160 mph for example can actually handle 192mph
160mph X1.20%
beyond the 186 mph mark though, i will not argue with you at all as no street tires are rated for up to 190 mph with this much of a load... knowing you have a 20% cushion is a great comfort Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!! !!

155 is enough for me.. I once had my '01 SLK320 up to 135mph on "Alligator Alley", here in Florida... WWOOOOWWW..... I need to switch jobs
It will be hard not to race those 'Yota Corolla's, and Firebirds on I-95.. I will save my gas for the 911's and Ferrari's

I 95 is a wonderful drive!!!!I remember busting through there going against a jag with this beautifful young lady behind the wheel. She fell behind after 20 or so miles of road flirt. I guess she wanted a good look at my rear. Anyways, I love the wide grassy divider and trees all around. You are so lucky to live there.
It is so perfect for a convertible.

Good points on the weight of the baby.
For your infos, I read within a french car magazine, that AMG did some tests with no governor chip. They get the top speed of 335km/h (208 Miles/h), I guess they are not bull****ing on this kind of infos, so which tyres are they using ?
Perhaps with the tyres used on Ferrari 456GT, which is a little bit less in weight (1700kg, do not know how to convert in lbs), but similar in top speed (over 300km/h).

SL55AMG... Alligator Alley is a crazy road! If you stray 1 foot onto the shoulder you will be at the mercy of the Everglades!
That road scares me... lol .

1M, F550M, F550B, F40, S600, 365GTC, DBSx2, etc.
Robbie: that could be speedo error. These things aren't very accurate, especially at speed. In the m5 you will hit an indicated 165 when the 155 cuts you off.
Or you could have the euro limiter (more likely) which is set at 186.

no, the 155 and 185 limiter are both in place. A few people in various other "limited" cars on the gumball were down on the SL55 "limited" top end too. I think they have been a bit 155mph conservative!

i've done 155mph ( 250kmh ) a few times on the freeway.
ITS NOT FAST ENOUGH!!!!!
I NEED MORE SPEED!!!! The VMAX unit from Brabus should do the trick!
Honestly... do I look like a guy who wants to take it easy????

salam to you,
is it true that most of the benz cars in iraq were stolen from kuwait?
LOL!!!!
My best wishes to you and the people of iraq.
Ferraris may not be that common here, although some rich dudes have them but hardly ever drive them around cause the traffic here is ridiculous! BMW's are very common ( especially the M model and the new M3 is selling like hotcakes right now ).
But the best sports car without a doubt is the Porsche 998. There's loads of them here!

I just got a reply back from AMG on the issue of a derestricted limiter on my SL55 but their reply was that that option was 'restricted' to Europe only. Someone earlier had posted that it would cost $1500 for the mod, would he/she like to comment further? Another bit of novel info is that the name of the technician that built the engine for my SL55 would be located on the Kompressor unit! I guess I know who to email in case there are any issues eh? Lastly, AMG indicated that 500bhp would be the maximum that they would go for the SL.
