More ABC questions

03 SL 55 with about 64k miles. I bought it 2yrs ago, had a few instances of ABC 'visit workshop' warnings, so did that. 'Workshop quoted me something like $3k to fix, I didn't have $3k handy so I passed.

Interestingly, the warnings stopped showing up. Drove it 2 - 3 times a week for a year and a half, no warnings. Now warnings have returned, 'visit workshop' followed quickly by 'drive carefully' in RED and the ABC seems to shut off completely, car goes to highest setting, and is noticably bouncier.

I get one trip of 30 minutes os less after sitting off overnight, then RED on every start up.

No noise or leakage symptoms.

Any thoughts?

You may want to replace the filter and pentosin. Then do a 45min rodeo.

If that doesnt fix it, you have to either replace the valves or overhaul them yourself

You win the "shot in the dark" competition for this quarter. Seriously.

The car needs to be read. It could be one of many things that can go wrong with abc. It could be a dirty fluid that requires a filtering and new filter. I have never seen this fix anything btw. It could be a valve body. It could be an abc pump or a shock. It could be one of the many sensors. Reading the car will point in the right direction.

+1

IT is most likely the shock. Have it read and diagnosed first and then raise the car to see if there are any leaks. IF you need a new shock, I could give you a tip on where to get some for a good price :-)

BTW, who was that thief who asked for 3K?

The dealer price of the shock for the SL55 is 1800. Why is this guy charging $3000. what a thief

I really hope I am wrong on this, but I think you will find out you have a pump failure. I had the exact same symptoms. No leaking fluid, no noise. Once in a while, after a start up, the hyde pump would manage enough pressure in the system for ABC to work. On the next start up, it might not. The red drive carefully message means you have no ABC. Only the springs are working and the car bounces like crazy even at low speeds. Hyde pump failure is all too common on an 03.

Good luck bro

Ditto! it is probably your pump - I hope you have extended warranty, because not cheap.

With das the abc pump can be stress tested to verify functionality. A healthy pump will maintain around 180 bars of pressure that might drop to 100 or so during rodeo but should recover quickly.

A dying abc pump is also audiably chatty when cold.

Good to know. I dont recall hearing mine making noise, but I was new to the SL when it failed and my ear was not yet tuned to the symphony of noises that is the 55k on start up.
