SL 65 Exhaust Mods

Okay guys,

I am about to have the resonators cut out of the mufflers on my 65. Have any of you done this? This is not my daily driver so I am not overly concerned about the car being too loud. It is too stealthy quiet for my taste now.

I came out of a blue 2006 Lambo Gallardo manual shift car. I loved the sound of the Lambo. It was a little loud but I never drove the car more than an hour or two a couple times a week.

I would like to hear your feedback on modding the 65's for more/better sound. The car has Super-Car Performance. It should have Super-Car Sound IMO....

with the v12 tt it will be hard to get any kind of battle cry. turbo cars are always muffled.

remove resonators and see how you like it. it will never sound like a gallardo- that is for sure.

A v12 will never sound like a v8. There always will be the prrrrrrrr sound of the v12 as opposed to the delicious gul-gul-gul of the v8

I hope my sound effects made sense

Deleting the mufflers will give you an awesome sound. I did this mod to my SL65 after hearing Benz-O-Rama signature audio clip.

It roars when you get on it but has a gentle rumble when cruising. It is much less loud than you'd expect. Apparently the turbos devour some of the sound.

This mod cost me $105 (+12-pack Heineken tip) at my trusted muffler shop.

I did a muffler delete which keeps the car looking stock. Mufflers and AMG Tips are still intact but gives a great throaty tone. Muffler has been made internally to be a straight pipe. Cost is only the time needed to weld the pipe perforations closed. See the video shot by an unknown person at our Cars and Coffee Meet this weekend which gives a fairly good representation of the sound.

2008 MB CL600. 2020 MB E300 de. 1987 BMW M535i.
That's pretty much how my sounds too.
Loooovin it!

But I had to remove the cats too!
Only muffler delete (with a straight pipe inside each), made no difference here on my 65..!
Still sounded bone stock!
Why, I can not say!

But on my old 600's (one S-Class & three SL's), they sounded like that with the cats kept on, and with only muffler delete.

The model years on my 600's were 2004 & 2005, while my 65 is a 2007, maybe that's why...

I totally removed my mufflers, extended the pipes to rear and had the AMG tips welded to end. Who needs the dead weight. Looks OEM.

Maxabo - how'd you cure the codes when you eliminated the Cats?

Thanks guys!

I think I'll try deleting the mufflers and leaving the cats. My car is at Autoscope in Dallas. Carson & Bryan are pretty sharp with these cars. Don't tell them I said so...

Life's funny, in the early days I loved big powerful silent cars, Jag's and
Rolls Royce for instance. Then Cosworths came along, followed by Evo's
and Subaru's, as much as I liked them after a while they did me in.
So when the SL63 came out with it's sound track I loved it, until I went
on a long journey. I don't know whether I was in a bad mood but the exhaust
annoyed me, along with the tyre noise. I was also having a love affair with
my recently tuned S600, It's amazing acceleration all without fuss and noise.
So the SL63 has gone and I have a SL65, this also has superb acceleration
without fuss and maybe a little growl. Anyway that's the way I'm leaving it.
It's great to overtake the boy racers with their horrible sounding little
hatchbacks, whilst just wispering effortless passed.

My question is are the guys that have done turbo back setups running straight pipes, x-pipes, or h-pipes and why?

It is a straight pipe with just the resonator removed. -if you have to ask why...well...

65's don't have resonators they only have cats. I asked why to see if guys were concerned with scavenging on these cars. Also going off what every one has said in this thread they have primarily done a muffler delete which means they are still running the factory h-pipe. I'm hoping for someone that has done a full turbo back setup.

No scavenging going on with the SL65 or 600.

Yes they do. See the attached. It is #470 and #460 on the diagram.

I would suggest that you do some research before making statements like that.
