NEED HELP DEALING WITH "STEALERSHIP"

Howdie Folks.

I hope everyone is enjoying the weekend. I would like your input on something.

I recently purchased a 2005 SL65 with ~53,000 miles from second owner. The car came with a transferable warranty that pretty much covers everything minus $100 deductible (this is NOT through MB corporation). Thank the good Lord.

Long story short, about 2 weeks after purchasing the car, I began experiencing the dreaded power hardtop issues: first running slow, then barely operating, and then really not operating. I also noticed that there were a few small (~1/3") areas on the screen of the command center where pixels were out. This warranty covers EVERYTHING, and they even approved $5000 new command unit.

My issue: Call me a simpleton, but I own the car, and as such, I own all the parts in the car. If they change my clutch, brakes, rotors, etc, I have a right to the old parts. The same should apply to the command unit (This is not a core exchange...and furthermore, Mopar/Chrysler is eating a $5000 bill from Mercedes on the unit....not like MB is replacing it out of the goodness of its heart.

So I'm trying to see if anyone has any fantastic explanations for me as to why MB has rights to the old unit. I own the car, the unit, and I intend to sell the old unit on the forum, Ebay, etc. once the new unit is installed.

PS If you're looking for a fantastic aftermarket Warranty, check into the Chrysler/Mopar "Max Performance" warranty. It's 5 years/50,000 miles on any car newer than 1997 and less than 125k miles. It's already paid for itself and I've owned the car for a month.

Thanks.
Jason

IMOB, if you use the extended warranty to replace your parts, then you do not own the old parts. The old parts would belong to the warranty company and of course we know they don't need to keep the old parts... so up to them to just let the MB stealership has it. If you have a good relationship w/ the service advisor, he me just let you have the old parts.

I think I agree with mitviet. They are basically "trading" you good new parts for old broken parts.

I agree with both of you, so long as the original unit is going to the warranty company (Chrysler/Mopar). But I'm fairly certain from speaking to the MB service rep that MB is charging Chrysler/Mopar $5000 for the new unit, but then MB is turning around and keeping the old unit for itself, so that they can refurbish it and turn around and sell it to someone else.

Not a big deal. Just a bit strange to me if MB is making out on both ends. It's not a core exchange issue as far as I can tell.

Again, thanks for feedback. Much appreciated. I hope you guys are having a great weekend.

Cheers,
Jason

It's like a core -- they require the replacement for rebuild.

It's not up to the dealership. They just have to follow the rules.

Yes....simpleton would be putting it nicely.

You are crying because they replaced a $5k part with a working one so you couldn't sell the broken one on Ebay? Jeez.....

Your old parts are worth money most of time. The insurance company pays you for the new parts but does not pay for you to (possibly) make money on the back end selling the old parts.

This place is a joke.
The COMAND is an "exchange" unit and your old one needs to be returned to be remanufactured.

Hi Guys.

Thanks for feedback (mostly constructive). I didn't realize that this was an exchange item. I feel badly that the warranty company is eating the cost of a whole new unit (~$5400) when all that needs replacing is a $200 Samsung or Sharp (can't remember brand) LCD screen. Saw it on Ebay. But I guess it's a closed unit and they like to try to keep it that way.....hence the complete COMAND UNIT.

Happy Easter.

How come a COMAND head unit is 5k? It's 2-3k at max IMO.

Agree, I had mine replaced last summer (under MB warranty) and the total bill to Mercedes was less than $3k. And my dealer is not cheap.

Very interesting. Not to be negative, but I really don't trust any of these dealerships. I will have to try to get more information when I pick up the car (invoices, documemtation, etc). The MB service rep in Pompano Beach stated that the cost of a "NEW" (in reality it's simply a refurbished unit from the MB factory) is ~$5,400, which I thought sounded pretty steep.

But I would presume that the MOPAR warranty company would keep up on the going rate of these items. I wouldn't think that they would be willing to cut a check for an overpriced item that the dealership is trying to gouge them on.

We shall see. Again, thanks for feedback.

MSRP for brand new 2005 SL65 AMG display unit is $2560.

can be had for around 1900 from online vendors .

add also 1-2 hours of labor @ $150

That's insane. I've got to figure out what the heck this dealership is doing. I found the same thing looking around online. That's insane.

Thanks for the heads up.

I'm trying to find the link that quotes the MSRP on the display so that I can show MOPAR and/or dealership. I'll be ticked if the dealership is trying to gouge the warranty company because it makes me look bad.

Thanks
