Does anybody have any ideas about what these blue things are between the speedometer and tachometer ? Perhaps they're LEDs?

thats a radar detector somebody put in it. could be a k40

Well that's interesting.

I'm pretty new to the world of radar detectors - do you have any suggestions about where I should look to see if it's still present and connected? Do you know if the typical install leaves the actual radar detector under the dash or might it be hidden somewhere else (under the seat etc)?

look for a receiver mounted in your front grill and possible laser countermeasures built into your licence plate frame(s)

many k40 systems included a volume control knob (with a switch built in) ... look for that mounted near your knees

look for a remote control in the glove box, etc. front grill rectangle box mounted forward, sometimes same box behind rear bumper
look up k40 and see what it looks like

Thanks very much for your help so far. Do you have any suggestion where a typical install might locate the host module? I'm trying to figure out how much of the system was left in place by the previous owner (no remote of course).

if everything looks like its hooked up call k40 and ask them how much for a remote,, and to send instruction sheet it probably works

I have that K40 system on my car with the "blue lights" (front and rear) in a different location. The system has worked great for me. It is getting a little dated though, there are so many things that set off the "lights" & "beeps" of the system. Unbelievable that most of the new cars today have some sort of electrical signal, especially the GM vehicles. I have spoken to the K40 people in the past and you can get a remote for your system.
