SL nose job
Hi,
I am new to the board. I wanted to get some thoughts on the SL nose job. I think it looks pretty agressive. I have a Silver SL now, when this comes out I will go to the SL55

Surely, sir, you must be mistaken.
That nose is the most ugly, contrived, ridiculous and pretentious piece of styling since the Edsel - or even since Audi's latest attempt.
I cannot believe for a moment M-B will revise the SL's styling with that protuberance.
No chance!
If you want one like that try the add-on merchants after 2006.... it won't be a Mercedes in-house update.

Well, I guess I know where you all stand on SLR.
If this is the real thing and you want purchase a SL55, do you wait or buy now?

those pictures of the revised SL are what the specialty tuner "Lotec" has come up with on the facelift of the SL.
Mercedes has speculated on changing the styling of the SL to look more closely alike to the SLR, but that is not final at all..hopefully they dont go through with it , i think that they SL is perfect as it is....

sl and M-class E320 4Matic SLK350
The British car magazines report we will see the new nose on the 2006 SL, no iffs, ands or buts. The only question is when it will show up in 2005. Recall the SL first came out in the spring so we could see the new body style as early as May 2005.

"Official" word on new SL nose
From no less a trusted source than the Mercedes Enthusiast, June 2004 issue 32 the following is reported at page 65 in a feature article comparing the SLK350 to the SL350:
"The new SLK's nose takes its styling cues from the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren, with a new front-end look that will feature on all models bearing the "SL" designation from now on. The face-lifted SL, due in 2005, will complete the F1-style-nose sportscar trilogy."
Cry and Weep or get used to the styling change. (Of course you can always grab a 2005 with the current styling.)

Hmm, picking ours up in 4 weeks or so. Don't know whether I should be pleased or pissed as I don't like the new front so just hope to God it doesn't grow on me.

Since I always tend to go for the latest thing, the look of the revised nose probably will grow on me. My inclination would be to replace my then two year old SL600 with a new one, taking a huge loss on depreciation of the obsolete model. In the end I probably won’t do this just to avoid being berated by my wife, who would tell me (correctly) that I’m a spoiled child and a complete idiot.

I think the SL looks perfect as is
The change will be a lot more radical than the current SL's clean front end and bodywork,so hopefully the front end isn't going to look cluttery and different and the rest of the car cleanly lined...any ideas on what they'll do with the other parts of the car??

Probably as little as possible. This is merely a styling update, not a model revision. But you raise an interesting point that by changing the nose it may require some additional styling changes elsewhere to give the proper look. The side skirts would be an easy target as they could be altered without much difficulty. Adding a spoiler to the rear would be another easy to do option but it would probably be subtle.

And our only hope is that MB will do this facelift more complex so the SL with modification wont be looking like those Lotec-experiments.. i truly believe in MBs stylists qualifications...
It's not as simple as it seems to make "nose" for SL and don't spoil whole design [and car] .

I think the jury is still out on the F1 nose.
First, I wouldn't consider any of the sources quoted "official" and second, Mercedes tends to be much more conservative on its higher-end models (as most manufacturers). People buying cars at usually twice or three times the price point of lower-end models (including the SLK) tend to fit into a demographic segment that doesn't go for "trendy" cars. I believe the average SL buyer is still between 50 and 60 (correct me if I am wrong).
From what I understand is there have been just as many responses coming from DC Germany (including from Bremen where is SL is manufactured) and Switzerland (triggered by customer questions) that the F1 nose will not make it into the facelift.
Guess we'll see

Looks more attractive on the lighter colored car. Angle of photo is also more complimentary than the Autospies shots. Can't really see any difference in the styling treatment between the two, but the original shots seem to have a more squarish grill treatment that is less flattering.
