SBC warranty extended to 25 years
Just read elsewhere that MB has extended the warranty for all SBC cars to 25 years. This info was just released earlier today. Waiting to hear if they are going to do reimbursement for any out of pocket costs people experienced replacing the unit.

It's true, and yes, like other warranty extensions, if you paid for the service and now it would be eligible for warranty coverage, you can open a claim with MBUSA for reimbursement.

I have replaced the SBC twice during the 6 years I've owned my 2003 SL55. Of course I did the work myself, so while I did buy them from Mercedes both times, I am not so sure that it will be so easy to get them to re-reimburse. I would love to hear stories of anyone in a similar situation who has been compensated.
Cheers,
Chris

after a few hundred thousand activations of the brakes the unit will say it has reached its limit and that it needs replaced. the entire unit needs replaced. other failures include the pressure accumulator going bad or the electric brushes inside getting worn out.

around what mileage does it happen?

depends on how many times the brakes are activated. each time you press the pedal counts as an activation. every time traction control engages also counts as an activation since MB uses the brakes to act as a limited slip. So if you only ever drove on the highway and rarely pressed the brakes it could be forever. for most its somewhere between 80k-120k miles. if you have STAR you can go in and look to see how many activations are currently on the counter and how close you are getting to the limit

Or no point to bother looking till it happens..doubt I can get it changed early lol.
I feel I'd rather not know because then I'll never hit the brakes hahah or slides

technically speaking you can change the counter to whatever number you want if you have developer mode in your STAR. there are several instances where people have lowered their number to keep their SBC going when it reached its limit, which to me is a pretty foolish and dangerous thing to do. probably not necessary since most will still have at least 10 more years until the warranty will now expire.

Sure, and we all don't have to choose to drive a V12 Benz if keeping it running properly is gonna be something we can't afford. I have 2 Toyotas that cost me very little to run, wife drives a Chevy. The Benz is a toy, it replaced my 350z Nismo as my play car. If I was afraid to do what it takes to keep it working right, I could have kept the Z which needed absolutely $0 in repairs for 6 years.

We replaced the SBC recently with the refurbished unit that was bought directly from the Mercedes dealership. Wondering who you need to contact exactly in order to be reimbursed?

WOW! How timely. My car just started displaying "BRAKE -- Service brake -- Visit Workshop" last Sunday.
Any recommendations on what dealer to go to in Southern California?

SBC is a safety concern, ABC is also a big safety concern for the public. A ruptured line spilling hydraulic fluid everywhere ought to be a hazard for other drives as well as yourself losing control of the vehicle. Something like this should also be considered for warranty, esp when i've seen cars ruptured their lines rather early on and with low mileage.
