"SL500 AMG"?

I saw today a gentleman driving a "SL 500 AMG". Obviously, it was not a real AMG, but perhaps just the body moldings of an AMG. I pulled up next to him. He appeared embarrased when he saw a real AMG and a not too obvious frown on my face. Has anyone had a similar experience? Why would anyone want to buy a fake AMG!

Yes I have had a similar experience and I dont have a problem with it. If someone has an SL500 and adds an AMG bodykit and say AMG wheels then if they want to call it an SL500 AMG thats fine with me. If they were to call it an SL55 AMG then that would be fake.

yes, actually I had the same exact experience...I'm the guy in the sl500 AMG if you have problem with me or my car, we can settle this like adults, PM me a meeting place..................................

SIKE ,

but seriously, the AMG badge issue has been beaten to death so many times on this board, I really think people are getting tired of commenting. If you're interested in the threads relating to this topic, go ahead and do a search...some of them are extremely long, boring, and repetative

Paul, I understand the distinction you have made and I agree with it. Moreover, I do not believe that one would have to shy away from preferring a 500 with an AMG body kit. I note, however, this fellow looked like he just got caught with his hand in the cookie jar.

MB includes the body kit option in its brochures for $5300 US. At these prices, I don't understand why anyone would not spend an additional 15k or so over the cost of the body kit to get a true AMG, not just one that looks like it.

Regards,

Why would you do that?!!!??!?!

If i had that car I would be so freakin happy i would probably spray paint "ITS AN AMG" on the side, and this guy debadged it. Whatever floats your boat.

....yes 'fraid so. But just imagine if you had a 55 with F1 performance pack so the body looked like a 65 - you could take off the 55 badge at the rear and the V8 Kompressor badges on the sides and replace with 65 and V12 biturbo.

Regards,
I used to have a problem with this but now that ive seen how expensive real AMG's are in HK i understand why people want to put an AMG badge on the back of their cars.

Ive seen so many cars with an AMG badge and its fine by me just as long as they DO NOT try to double as a real one by putting E55 or SL55 or the V8 Kompressor on the sides.

just for an example an SL500 here costs 65K USD cheaper than the SL55. and the SL350 costs 100K USD cheaper.

Sl 500 Amg

This person got the badge from his mercedes dealership. Usually when you put the sport package on your car they will give you a badge saying AMG.

Another option was that he could have bought the badge from mercedes because they now sell them to whom ever they want to.

2004 E500 w/ AMG Sport Package
I think the only people upset with this, is the guy with a real AMG model, thinking that someone may be reaping the benefits for having an AMG Sport Package. Sure some people rebadge their cars and put on E55, SL55 etc. Those are idiots why. Because once you look at the calipers or the pipes, you know. Those you laugh at. Why cant you put AMG on a AMG Sport package once you leave E500, SL500 etc. I saw a guy the other day with an SL600 (a real one, i checked the calipers) with an AMG badge because he had the AMG Sport pkg. He obviously isnt short on cash. I personally have an AMG badge on the back of my E500 with AMG Sports pkg. I'm not trying to say i have an AMG model, i just like the fact that i had a AMG sports pkg and put AMG on the back so people would know its not the normal E500. People do things for diffrent reasons. This guy i know debadged his E55 because he thought people were following him home trying to rob him.

Maybe Mb should have a badge called AMG Sport for spending 5k for the pkg.

.
in regards to badges, i have my sides debadged and was going to do the same to the back, but it just looks too good.

what i noticed is that a lot of people after finding out that i drive an sl55 follow up with a question "is it amg?", so not everyone probly knows that there is no such thing as sl500 amg

Lets look at it this way. The people who need to be told it has an AMG kit on it wouldn't really care anyway, the way they see it, your car looks like a normal E500 who has just put a badge on the back. The people who are really clued on Mercedes will know you have opted for the package and don't need a badge on the back to tell them that.

It's like people putting M badges on the back of their BMW Sport, its all a bit false economy.

as a side note, I met a guy yesterday with fake RS4 badges on his S4 and he turned out to be a really cool person....so, from now on, I'm not discriminating against people with fake badges LOL...

I don't see how that has any relevance to the topic. Leave your gushy love for this forum in the off-topic category, please, thank you.

In regards to the question, I think it's fine. You paid the $$$ for the Sports Package, and you paid it for a reason. For example, if you have an SL500 Sport, it is different than an SL500 w/o Sport. There's nothing wrong with adding an AMG badge as long as you have the wheels or some sort of AMG equipment(cosmetic or performance). Just don't put the 55 or V8 Kompressor badge.

Carlsson CK55 RS SL55
By way of contrast, I have an SL350 badge on the rear of my Carlsson modified SL55.

Whilst the main objective is not to advertise the underlying nature of the beast itself, I must admit to a certain amount of evil pleasure when overtaking other cars and seeing the expressions on the owners' faces as they try to figure out what the hell is going on.

Sure, 4 exhausts is a give away, but not as many people as you might think know the significance of those

So as has been said earlier, it Different Strokes for Different Folks.

Well if you lived in southern california I would say you saw my car. Trouble is there are maybe 3-4 E55 running around with no badges.

I did not buy my AMG cars to show off so the badges come off in an effort to blend in. The people that know what the car is will know with out big chrome letters yelling "it goes fast." Heck I have people come up and say what a nice car I have... clearly the lack of lettering did not stop them! But yes a 17 year old kid did pull up to me at a stop light and lecture me for taking the badges off. That kid made me laugh... his CLK320 said CLK -- no 320. Now what the heck is that? Just take it all off!

But im clearly in the minority here I like having the 996 owner think he has has a chance at a stop light. Trouble is when the road turns... hes gone! With no badges a Pewter E55 looks like nothing... nothing at all Thats how I like it!
