DTK Top Mounted Intercoolers

Based on a suggestion from NORCAL I'm considering purchasing the DTK top mounted intercoolers for my 08 SL55. Anybody put these on a 55, and if so, what improvements did you realize?

DTK is claiming I'd run 5-10 degrees F above ambient at cruise and 20-30 degress above ambient in a 200mph pull. If true, this would keep my ITA's below 120 degrees where I understand timing begins to get retarded.

Thanks in advance for you input.

Bill

I don’t think that product has been installed on many cars. Have you switched your pump and put your stock cooler on in addition to the weistec? I would do that first before testing these

I will change out my pump and pipe the OEM HE in series with the Weistec unit. That will do nothing about my high IAT's however but will help with recovery times.

Check your IATs with the new pump first.

I don't go above 130f with a hard pull to trips stock 010 and 83mm.

I recently bought a 05 SL55 with a weistec blower & 56 mm fixed ( Chawkin’s car). Got a KC with it along with an AM HE but no ice tank. I ripped off the HE and IAT was still running high (90-110) cruising. I’ve recently installed a trunk tank and a Stewart EMP pump, plumped 3/4” hoses throughout with a 1” feed to the pump. Saw IAT dropped way down to 60 IAT at cruising around city driving, haven’t test the freeway or WOT yet due to a strut leak and don’t want to get slam; I got a set of coilovers waiting to install.

Ive experienced the KC for a year on my E55 and I swapped to the Force Induction Interchillers last fall. TBH, both works great to cool down my aggressive pulleys (77 scp/180 cp, current setup) but I got to give it to the Interchillers for a better built product. But both kept my IAT way below ambient.

I’m not sold on the top mount if it promises IATs at above ambient for $2300 bucks compared to the KC $650-700 or Interchillers for $1500 with IATs at 20-30f below ambient (So Cal temps). BTW, cabin temp still stays cold.

Just my .02....

Thanks MSG, never heard of Forced Induction Interchiller. It's curious since I own a Holden Commodore SSV (naturally aspirated version of the Commodore) which was built in Australia and is used extensively on their website as a demo car.

I'll run this option to ground. Since I will be driving my SL mainly in South Florida where ambient temps are typically warm to hot, I'm not inclined to go the KC option as I understand it completely stops AC flow to the cabin when employed.

Anyway, thanks for that advice. But as Das Geld advises, start by replacing my pump.

Both KC & Interchillers runs in-conjunction with the ac compressor to cool ic & cabin simultaneously. Only during WOT is when compressor shuts down. Therefore, a nice trunk tank will assist the cooling process until you let off the gas.

That said, the Interchillers is way superior in comparison to KC. It’s twice the size with a solenoid valve to shut off cabin so it can concentrate cooling the ic and prevent condensation for the track as needed via a toggle switch (KC equivalent to the drag kit). The Interchillers is base out of Australia and it’ll take 3.5 weeks to deliver; however, you might be lucky to get your KC ship in 3.5 months. Customer service is excellent and Kirk Chiller will talk you through all the nuts and bolts regarding the Interchillers. Joe Kincaid of KC will promise you the world and....Let’s say I’ve been disappointed often.

Thanks, gonna check out Forced Induction Interchillers. I am able to afford whatever I want so the 2X price isn't a big deal, just want to solve the limiting issue.

Hope there's not a problem as this would go on and SL, not the E55 you apparently had it installed on.

only issue is locating a spot to install that huge core. My buddy is working on installing one on his SL55, I’ll update on what worked for him.
