I thought Mercedes dealers no longer change oil from the bottom right...?

they use vacum pump to suck oil from the top...

Possibly, this is done by a member of the forum, not MB, the dealers could possibly use the vacuum pump method.

Mityvac fluid evacuator

While you can change the oil by draining it from the bottom of the engine, it's not particularly easy on the R171, especially if you have the SLK350 w/AMG Package. The problem is that typical auto ramps won't fit under the front bumper (although Rhino plastic ramps will work with standard bumper).

Since the drain plug is towards the back, you will probably get most of the oil drained, even if the car is at an angle on the ramps.

The first time I drained the oil, I went thru great pains to raise the car on all four corners so that it was level when I removed the oil. The reason I wanted the car to be level is that I wanted to check the dipstick level after adding 5, 6, 7, 8, and 8.5 quarts.

You can find a Mityvac fluid evacuator online for about $75 for the air operated model and a few dollars less for the one with the manual pump. I use the one with 8.8 liter capacity. I attached the largest diameter tube supplied with the Mityvac to the top of the dipstick tube with a rubber stopper (w/hole in it). The dipstick tube in effect becomes an extension of the Mityvac tube. It takes about 5 minutes to extract 7 liters. I then inserted the smallest Mityvac tube down to the bottom of the dipstick tube to extract the last liter.

Just to be absolutely certain that I evacutated all of the oil, I removed the drain plug. I was surprised to see that only enough oil drained to make a small puddle of oil about 4 inches in diameter on the bottom of the oil drain pan. Mityvac extractors work very well.

The cost of the extractor is paid for in the first oil change unless your dealer happens to be running an oil change special discount.

I don't plan to drain the oil from the drain plug in the future unless I come up unreasonably short when I use the evacuator.

Hope this info helps.

That's the unit with the hand operated pump. I got the next model up that requires an air compressor to operate. I find that I am able to transport the full Mityvac to Autozone or Advanced Auto to recyle the oil.
