I'm Looking For A Fathers Day Gift, Help Me!

Hi All,

I have signed up with a few Mercedes Forums because I'm on a Fathers Day Mission and I'm running out of time!

Fathers day is coming up and my Dad owns a new Mercedes SLK, he is always complaining that when my mom and him go away it's extremely hard to fit anything in the trunk because of the Roof Mechanism.

So for fathers day I have decided to try and find him a luggage set that is made for his car. I've been looking round the internet extensively and managed to find one store that seems to do exactly what I'm looking for.

It's actually an eBay store:

http://stores.ebay.com/RoadsterBag-Luggage-USA

The problem is I know very little about cars, luggage or this company and I'm a little concerned about buying something I know nothing about.

I was talking with a friend of mine and his Dad said the best place to to find out about something like this would be to ask the people that own the cars and that there are forums for this, so here I am!

Does anyone here own this Luggage for their SLK or maybe another car that they do luggage for? if so what is it like?

Or maybe some of you wouldn't mind looking at the site and telling me what you think about this Luggage, price, design etc... as everyone in here will know far more about cars than I do so I trust that you can point me in the right direction.

Any help the members of this forum can give me would be great and if you know of a better product I'm open to suggestions.

Thumbs up

I don't own a set, but it looks nice and the seller has excellent feedback. If you don't mind the price, go for it. It is the best set I have seen so far.

Thanks for the first bit of feed back.

What do you think of the price? it's a 4 piece luggage set so $245 seems like a really good deal.

It is a good price for custom fit luggage. If you can find luggage that is not custom fit about the same size as those, the price would be around $150.

You would have to do a lot of shopping around to find the correct fit so the cost benefit is probably not worth it. It is also better to give a custom match set as a gift. I am sure your dad would think of it as part of the car.

I agree a great deal of shopping around would be needed to try and find individual matches and it is much better to have a complete matching set that has been designed for your needs.

Is Trunk Space/Luggage much of an issue for other SLK owners? is this a product that other members would be interested in purchasing?

You connot get more space utilization with any other set of luggage. However, there are no wheels. If you plan on only going to places that have luggage carts or porters then these are ideal.

I have used the soft wheeled bag sold by Rick Steves. I lot of standard wheeled bags are just a bit too long. You can get two of these and a variety of soft bags in the trunk. A good solution if you need to be more portable and self-sufficient.

That is a good point, these cases do not have wheels.

I do think overall RoadsterBag offers the best all round luggage set, if not the only luggage set I've found for the Mercedes SLK and what looks like quite a range of other cars.

I'd have say price, design and as the best fitting companion for the SLK RoadsterBag has come out on top.

I still have a little more time before the cut off to order for Father's Day so I'll hang in a little while longer to see if anyone else has something to add or alternative.

Thanks "Ynot" for that extra bit of information.

After reading that other post I have a question that is off topic but I'm sure one of the readers can answer it.

I sounded like people go across to Europe to buy their SLK's? why is that? isn't it more expensive to buy one there and then have it shipped back to America? and are they legal in America or do they have to be converted?

When I purchased my SLK, it was a hot selling item, my dealer had a very hard time keeping the SLK on the lot for 3 days. I had a good relationship with the salesman as my father purchased a S500 4matic the previous year so all I got was a measly $500 off MSRP, while most ppl didn't get one penny off, maybe a free set of car mats that comes with the SLK (don't tell the customer )

With Eurodelivery, you get 7% off MSRP, $725 destination fee waived, two nights (or was it one?) at any hotel of choice, taxi coupons to/from hotel/MB center/airport, airline discounts, and some other goodies. Not only this but the whole euro delivery and traveling around Europe is an experience you'll never forget or want to miss. I love it and highly recommend it. The discount paid for the trip and still had some left over for mods. Check it out on your next MB purchased.

Just to further clarify for giftidea, not all MBs are eligible for Euro delivery, and of the ones that are, not all are eligible for the discount in price.

The advantages are as Ynot described. The only real downside is the wait for your new car to be delivered to the US after you drove it (6-8 weeks I think).

For AMG modesl ED discounts are not included, if you have a great relationship with your sales manager, you can still pickup your SLK55 in Stuttgart, one for two members had done it.

That is usually the case, for me, I got mine in a month, agruably the fastest delivery time ever. I'm not complaining.

All models can get the 7%, if your dealer wants it to. I got the discount on an SLK350 when they were not actually allowed and on an E55. You might have to order it through a dealer in another state or something, but you can probably find one who will do it.

Thanks Vodil, AMG models were not included on the ED vehicle discount list at the time of my purchased but I just checked it again out of curiousity and the SLK55 is now included. Matter of fact, most AMG models are eligible for the ED discount, what a deal. http://www.mbusa.com/edp/vehicles/view-all.do
