Smile New to the SLK

Hey everyone, I wasn't aware of the private forum of the SLK55... I just ordered my SLK55 from the south of France and it should get here as soon as February. Im over excited, its obsidian black on the exterior and a red/black interior. Im moving to L.A for college at USC, does anyone know if a EU car is allowed to be shipped to Los Angeles for longer than a certain time ? For example I can only keep it in the country for 6 months ?

Anyway, is there anything to look out for whilst driving t he SLK, I was wondering whether the SLK came in MT? Or is it just the Auto as the dealer didn't mention it to me...?

I love all the videos, pictures, and the amazing look does it for me. I hope to continue sharing the car's aspects on the forum of the beauty that is called the SLK.

Regards,

Joseph

Welcome!

I'm not an expert, but I believe that if you bring a car here you either have to pay a huge tax on it, or keep taking it out of the country. In LA you'll be close to Mexico, but taking a '55 (or any nice car) there might be a dicey proposition.

The '55 only comes with an automatic trans, but the other models can take manuals.

Hijack: I need to know exactly where is the "south of France". To me, that's in the Mediterranean Sea or even in Spain if you're west enough.

Now if you are talking about southern France, then it's clear.

Speaking as a person who has moved to California after purchasing a new vehicle I can tell you that they will TAX the hell out of you if your car is newer than 6 months. I moved there from Canada and the cost to register my car was rediculous. This was back in 1999 and they wanted $6,500 to change my registration on a new 1999 BMW 328. You also have to make sure that the car is California emmissions compliant. It was easier to keep my Canadian registration valid and take my chances.

Hi, Joseph. You may find the info at the following link helpful. It is an article about importing cars into the U.S. from Roundel magazine which I posted this page when I was webmaster for the BMW Car Club of America website.

Thanks guys, the car is coming from Monaco, don't know if that will change anything, but I'd like to think that the car would be able to get to California with the Monaco plate, and retain the insurance from there...

Are you the same guy that posted a month or two ago currently living in Kensington? If not you may have a twin who was planning exactly the same as you..... getting a car from Monaco and then shipping over to LA. JoujiAMG was the guy from this thread:

I'm not convinced that you can insure a car from overseas unless its just for a quick visit.

6 months sounds about right. Where I live we see German tour busses in the summer with European plates which come over here to the US on board ships. Being a student and not working in the US should help your right to temporary status. I don't recall if you said you already purchased the car or not, but if not you might just want to buy one here where the price is less anyway and then take it home after you finish your stint at USC. If you buy it in Oregon there is no sales tax which you might be able to do since you are not going to be a resident of California anyway.
