SLS/R197/C197 AMG: Expensive Flop II
synonymous with gullwing, and gullwing it aint
What it is, isanother SL, and at 180 grand, $270,000 a very expensive SL. For that
you get a badly designed softop same as the SLR, guess they had a few
left over. This can be ordered in a different colour, so if you have black
with red roof, you get a big canvass red stripe across your bootlid. There
is also no rear windows and god knows where the wind deflector goes,
altogether a dogs dinner
To my mind if they are going to takeaway the talking point , gullwing doors , there is no need for the old
retro looks, and why the price, just greedy.
To me a SL65 offers better looks, proper convertible , more power and
less money, even if I prefer the SLS come SL gearbox. When a new SL AMG
comes along with the new 5.5 twin turbo lump at probably 70k cheaper
the SLS Roadster is dead and buried, think about it! unless you associate
the more it cost the better it will be.
people with too much money.
Nobody has answered my questions, Why is it a SLS.. when they copied the original with gullwings, with no gullwings it's an SL. IMO my SL63 is better looking and 70 grand cheaper, It's slightly slower but has a proper tin roof.
The retro looks were to compliment the gullwings, so without them it's
a retro looking SL, in other words a mish mash.AND they still charge the same,
a ridiculous 180 grand ,$270000 at to days exchange rate.
I have not driven one because I did not like the tight cramped interior, whether the roadster is the same is left to trying one.
But listen, MB decide to build a new version of an iconic car the gullwing
SLS. Why do they now feel the urge to get rid of the gullwings. When the
original SLS gullwing was around there was a roadster that looked the same without gullwings, it was called...........the SL.
And the fact that you haven't even driven one is what makes these threads even more ridiculous. You sound like a child who says they hate tomatos yet has never tried one. Now go have some tea and STFU.

pics on the SLS roadster. Not once have I said I hate it, or that it's rubbish.
I am merely pointing out that to be a SLS it needs to have gullwings, you can't disgree on that. In the review it says the doors will open the convential
way, I can't see what else they can do, the picture shows them opening a
la SL.
Why is it you can't have a sensible discussion on these point's instead of
just insults. I am pointing out some things after reading a review, not telling
fairy stories. No I havent driven one, but if I can't fit in it, there's no point
it driving like a dream.
And next time you qoute something mind you don't put your foot in your mouth, as you said in the 50's you could get a coupe or a roadster, or
an SLS so called by the gullwings, I don't remember a SLS roadster or coupe
just SLS so why the difference now. It's like a pepperoni pizza except it has
pinapple instead.

And if you can't fit in an SLS, then why do you care and continue posting these ridiculous threads??? Sounds to me like you're just too fat and bummed you can't fit into it.
Hence the reason why you think the SL63 is better....

I fell in love with the SLS after driving it at road Atlanta this summer.
Sound 8, squeeze your butt into the seat of the SLS and take it for a ride. then continue your crucification of the SLS if you see fit.

Hence the reason why you think the SL63 is better....on the SLS. So WHY are they calling the current SLS the SLS roadster, it's
a con especially when your asking the same money, and before you mention
my bum have , you ever thought I am not fat, I used to do a load of body
bulding, not so much now, and have very wide shoulders, which the gullwing
doors seem to clamp on.

AFAIK the name SLS is new, and the old gullwing was called 300SL, with later a 300SL roadster.
Your logic is so far off that it almost isn't funny anymore.

coupe, but the roadster was just SL roadster. The modern version is called an
SLS and is gullwing, so how can you call it an SLS when it doesn't have gullwings, as in the past it should be called SL roadster, SLS MEANS
GULLWING, is it sinking in yet.

Now they have a proper SL so they also have a problem with proper name for SLS(?) Convertible.
Or maybe they don't think they have a problem, based on their reckless recent naming of S/CL63 with 5.5 engine.

Oh dear wish I hadn't started now.
You can't make things synonymous, they just become that way. In the review
I just read it said they said the SLS being synonymous for gullwing will have
to remain just SLS for obvious reasons. Nothing lives in my head! there are
many synonymous things, like eating spaghetti is synonymous with a stained
shirt, or banging your head against a wall is synonymous with getting a headache, sorry let's get serious. once the SLS has established itself, gullwings will be synonymous when you mention SLS, this is my point.
It should be called something else to save the confusion. Maybe just drop
the word SLS and call it a Mercedes Gullwing ,.much nicer

You've started another rant thread over semantics and naming. Your points are absurd bordering upon mentally challenged. Please go away.

This is readily apparent.
You CANNOT be serious. There's no difference. And when it's a convertible, it won't be a "gullwing," SLS name plate or not.

Sound8, this thread is going rather badly. Let's pull the rip-cord and call it DOA. The first flop thread was shut down, this one is even worse on GP. Not trying to be insulting, and people are entitled to opinions, but the logic flow of the arguments you have on the SLS are not adding up.
The SLS is selling, it is sold out until 2012 so it is not a flop. Period.
