New E55 Owner confused with touchshift

OK this has been the single biggest disappointment for me so far. I went from a slick shifting Acura 6 speed gearbox to the 5 speed automatic with touch shift (2000 E55 AMG). I am not liking it at all. Before totally dissing it, I figured Id ask people that know about whether Im using it wrong.

1. Whenever I downshift, I cant be certain if the car is actually downshifting. Sometimes, it shows me what I want, but wont actually downshift. Sometimes, it does it. It inspires no confidence at all.
2. Whenever I upshift, it puts me in "D" mode! WTF? It wont let me upshift to the next gear, but it upshifts me all the way to D.
3. Sometimes it lets me downshift all the way to "1" which is very cool as most automanuals I have driven will limit you from downshifting that low unless you are doing 5 MPH.

Could someone please educate me on the proper way to use the touchshift? It just seems fidgety to me so far. Thanks.

that is because touch shift is bull****. you are going to want to just leave it in drive. the car is automatic..everytime i use touch shift and try to use it "seriously" i just end up saying what the hell did i just do...sometimes when i press it over to shift up it still stays in the same gear until the compter allows it to shift..it is just games...

The touchshift feature is not really a manual mode. It will kickdown if you step on the throttle heavily (if you are going slow in high gear). It will however, let you bounce the engine off the rev limiter.Y ou are not able to floor the gas (even without kickdown) and shift up to 3rd gear, let's say at 3000RPM. It will shift up to redline... So basically it is just like any other automatic!

Don't listen to the haters. It sounds like you are confused between the one touch feature and the hold it down feature. When you hold it down, it jumps to the extreme gear (1st if low and D if high). If you just want to up or down one gear, you have to pop it. I wish I could tell you that it is an awesome shifter, but I can't. At least the newer ones have M mode, which is nicer, but none are exactly responsive as you may want.

Hey jangy, in M mode, does the tranny hold gear regardless of throttle position? I think this is what he may want.

Thats good to know. What exactly do you mean by "pop it?" Even the slightest touch to the right puts it in "D" mode. Is there a trick to using it or wat?

Yes it does, but I think he wants responsiveness. the M mode is actually great for holding gear ONLY. Other than that, I am always in S or C. Just sometimes its fun to shift up a gear and floor the car from 1500 RPMS and not have it downshift as it winds up.

OK sorry, I probably didn't answer your question.
1. When you downshift (flick the lever to the left) it should down shift. It does however, sometimes take some time to downshift. The display will show what you have selected, but not the gear it is actually in.
2. It shouldn't skip gears if you simply flick the gear lever. It should be sequential. Note there is no "5" gear but goes up to D.

Yours may be different, and I haven't driven a W210 in a bit so i may be off. By pop, I mean literally pop. Not slam it over and hold at all. Just pull it and let go. Do not do it slow, either. Maybe slap is a better word than pop.

Hmm, thats not really great news. It means when I am doing 45 and want to pass the annoying minivan, I can MAYBE downshift (if the car fancies it) and cannot upshift to next gear but have to go back to "D" (I have tried everything including pulling and pushing the gear lever! but it will stubbornly put me in "D" mode)

I noticed you can roll down or roll up the windows with the remote. Is there a software hack that lets me lock all windows with just one click of the lock on the remote rather than having to hold down? Different settings perhaps?

Nope, can't do that either, but you can get it aftermarket. There are quite a few companies that make window up and down by remote. The "summer" feature is just when you aim your key at the infrared window on the driver's door, but MB makes you hold it the entire time so that nothing gets caught in there at their liable.

Sorry I don't have better news for you. For what its worth, you can probably pass that minivan in ANY gear with the power you got?

haha thanks Jingy! Its true I can pass the minivan in any gear, but it would be nice to do it myself rather than stomp on the gas pedal and wait for the computer to work it out for me. There isnt any drama in that!!

I have to say though, I do like having the torque. Its a very different feeling. I have always had high strung zero torque Japanese cars and its nice to be moving with no fuss.

Are there any other "oh wow" features about the 2000 E55 that I havent figured out yet? I just figured out the window close/open today and I thought it was clever.

Does the W210 have the tunnel feature? if so, you'll like that. Try cruising along with the windows down and the air on (ac doesn't matter). Press and hold the recirculate button and see if all your windows and sunroof close. This time, you do not have to hold the button after the rolling of windows starts. They will go to completion. Then, you can hold the button again, and it will roll the windos and sunroof down to where they were. I do this when I get behind a smelly or a smoker.

Come on W210 folks, help a new member out!

Wow that would be clever. But why would you have your windows/roof down when you have air on?

Well, i ride around lots with either the roof or some window open and the system on, just no air compressor (AC). Heck i even cruise sometimes with a little heat going on a cool evening and roll the windows for fresh air. All in your perspective.

Jangy...I want to drive in front of you smoking a nice Cuban so you can make sure that geature works properly ! You car may refuse to close the windows since it is set up to sense Cuban or Dominican cigars...default is open for Cuban and closed for Dominican.
