HID/Xenon Fog Lamps
Has anyone changed the H1 size bulb to an after market HID/Xenon system?
I don't mean a incandescent bulb swap or "HID look bulbs" or "xenon gas bulbs". I want a true HID/Xenon system that uses a H1 re-based HID/Xenon bulb.
I see many on E-Bay from $120-$300 I just need to know if the HID bulb will fit in a E55 / E430S round fog light.
I have used the PIAA 65W bulbs looked fantastic, but they melted my lamps in less than 2 hours , and have seen many here that have had to replace the lamps even with standard H1 55W bulbs. If I must replace the lamps I will up grade to a cooler running HID lamp, and hope for the best.

THe H3 base 35w HID bulb is too kong for the W210 fog housing. I installed the same 35w H3 based HID bulb on other car foglamps which uses Hella type projector housing and it works. There is also a 20W H3 base HID bulb available which is of a shorter bulb length which might fit the W210 E55 fog housing. I have not personally tried the 20W HID bulb but a friend of mine who is in the business of HID lighting told me about this shorter HID bulb.

you just have to find an hid kit that uses the shorter bulbs. the kit i have now in my fogs is a cheap $100 ebay job, but the bulbs were shorter and fit right into the h3 foglights with no problems.

I have H3 HID fog lights installed on my 01 E55 all you have to do is move the reflector block guard a little forward using you finger and the bulb will clear. Make sure this guard does not touch bulb!! That's it. Mine has been working for months. I will not go back to any incandescent bulbs in any of my cars headlights. HID forever!! Or until the next technology for lighting comes out.

Yes that is true. What I want to do is put in projector lenses in, as well as for the foglights. I seen the out come on a few E55 on here and it looks awesome. But I don't know much about the kits that need to be installed, let alone which ones.
If I put in projector lens in do I have to buy separate bulbs to fit or do they come in the kit...and what kit?
Just questions like that.

Would this kit work for the foglights and headlights? They sell both. If not can anyone point me to someone that is a good seller?

I used a cheap HID Kit on my burned out fog lights here are some pics.
Takes a long time to download.

Way too bright too use at night in traffic, I am ordering new fog lamps and converting back to halogen.
The Fog lamp beam pattern is still intact but the amount of light that escapes out side of the main beam pattern is blinding, and it pisses people off.

Why did they end up burning through...because they were cheap? Or to strong and bright?
There has to be something that can work. A few people said everythings good. Is this still true?
Which ones should I go with? I'm trying to find something on ebay.

The lamp melted because I used a PIAA 85 watt halogen bulbs, the OEM AMG lamps are cheap and the wire is substandard. Many 210s have melted fog lamps and wires, even with the OEM 55 watt bulbs. If you took the time to look at the link I posted you would have seen that the HIDs run much hotter than the halogen bulbs. So you can install the HIDs but they will melt the lamp over time.

Those that say "Works Great" yes it will if you don't let them over heat and melt, the plastic in the fog lamp housing starts to get soft after 20 minutes (on a 85 degree night). And yes if you don't mind everybody flashing their brights at you.

The HIDs do look cool, and I do plan more mods to my burned up set before I convert back to halogen in my new fog lamps ($427.00)
Take the time to look at the pics, even if you have to register at benzworld to see them, its worth it.

I am still working on my old lamps. Next step is to find the short HID bulb and try it in my new lamps to check the beam pattern and amount of light out side of the beam pattern.
The short bulb and a reflector that is new (not distorted by heat) may give me a well focused fog lamp. Then all I need is to cool it, you guys up north don't have to worry about that too much. I'll post my findings.

I am using the short H3 HID bulb no problem with heat! I know you took high temp readings on your HID over stock my HID run way cooler then stock bulbs. I do have the older W210 fog lamps so maybe they are made better then W211 ones. Mine have metal and all glass no plastic to melt. I purchased my shorter HID bulbs off Ebay came from china made very good. Maybe you can find another fog light system made of metal and glass to install that looks factory?
