gas mileage W210 E55 65mph vs 80mph??

i just took a 400 mile trip, filled her up again, & got calculated MPG of 25.7mpg. avg speed of 77mph, A/C on the whole time.

i'm very impressed with the hwy gas mileage, she's still running awesome.

but i'm wondering how much better MPG we can get if going at 60-65mph? has anyone tried?

2001: Supercharged E55 AMG
Hi!

Could you or someone else translate those numbers into Liter/KM ?

I got my car down to 8,7 Liter per 100 KM when going around 90-110 Km/h (56-68 MPH), and I'm REALLY impressed with that number for a big 5,5 liter V8

25.7 miles per gallon = 0.0915231842 liter / kilometer
(...which would also translate to 9.15231842 liter per 100 km)

How low are the RPMs in top gear for the E55 AMG? In 5th gear at 60 mph, what are the rpms? In 5th gear at 80 mph, what are the rpms?

Admittedly, from driving an E320 quite spiritedly (which has enough power to have some fun with) I only achieve around 24.0 mpg even on mostly highway trips with spirited acceleration and higher speeds. The car does around 87mph at 3000 rpms in top gear, a comfortable gear ratio for me. In some of the 8 cylinder Mercedes vehicles, some cars can comfortably achieve 80 mph at just around 2000 rpms.

RPMs are a huge factor when it comes to fuel consumption, as RPM increases, fuel consumption increases almost exponentially. Thus, for instance, in my C230, at 50 mph in top gear, the engine is humming at 2000 rpms and I can achieve 35 mpg; at 100 mph in top gear, the engine is at around 4000 rpms and I estimate it is getting less than 20 mpg. I also believe that since an E500 at 100 mph is only doing around 2500 rpms, it may actually achieve better fuel efficiency than a C230 because the RPMs are so relaxed.

Thus, in an E55 AMG, which is a very low-strung engine (unlike the M3 that has a completely strung-out engine), it should be able to achieve extremely respectable fuel economy during highway driving.

In the US, the 2002 E55 AMG was rated 17/25 City/Highway, compared to the 2002 E320 and E430 which were 20/28 and 18/26, the E55 is perhaps one of the most fuel sipping ultra-sport sedans that was ever on the market.

Today's E55 and E63 are much more thirsty; something that would discourage a person like me (who hates the dirty process of filling up a gas tank) from acquiring one.

Since I use cruise control on the freeway a lot, I know that at 75mph the car runs at 2400RPM. At 80 MPH its about 2600RPM. Around 90 it 3k RPM. Oh and at 157 its around 5100 RPM I wasnt really looking at RPM at that speed though so I may be off a little. The limiter kicked in at least 1K RPM before redline.

I get the same economy at 80ish (25MPG) but when i'm around 90ish it drops to 22MPG but then again i was playing pole position with a hapless BMW... Day to day city driving i get a solid 20MPG.

Everyone seems have better gas mileage than me. I average 18mpg during a mix of city and highway, 13mpg if I am 100% city and 21mpg of I am 100% highway.

Check your MAF and air filters. Bad MAF and dirty filters will cause yo uto burn more fuel.
