Shimmey at 50kmph not in the steering wheel!
Hello.
Around 5okmph and on the smoothest just paved road here- Yes I can't believe it they just paved part of the moon here after the worst year of cratering ever- I have a slight shimmy and you can't feel it on the steering wheel but in the chassis itself and then goe's away around 60kmph.
I figure with hitting so many awful potholes perhaps a rear mag is slightly bent. Otherwise, why wouldn't I feel it in the wheel?
Your opinions please.
Thanks.

Hi,
what's your mileage? Could be a driveshaft even at low 10's after 15 years. Check bearings, bushing, flex disc..
Found this online, maybe it helps.
#120 is the "rubber boot bearing", P/N 211 410 01 81
#130 is the bearing, P/N 008 981 43 25
#140 is the boot, P/N 202 411 04 97

I could be wrong but there isn't any noise whatsoever coming from the drive shaft in any way.
I've owned to 928's and understand torque tube issues related with driveshaft issues.
Flex disc. is another story.
These are just my hunches nothing is factual and I will keep your observations in my head.
Thank You..again.
Much.

Another note: My tires were over inflated. There was a hardly perceptible shimmy at all!
I deflated the tires to 32psi because the ride was too harsh. The ride is more supple but this shimmy showed it's dance.

I think owning a Merc is either:
- Buy a brand new one and drive it for 1-2-3 years, then replace it with a brand new one again. This is quite costly though, you get the biggest depreciation.
- Buy a youngtimer or older model and learn everything about it. Do your research and keep the car in top shape. Use only original parts. Then it drives like a Merc. This is the best option, costs 1/10-1/5 and brings a lot of joy. Takes a lot of time though. The good thing is you get to drive what you want, you can afford to own not 1-2 but 5 cars and people do not envy you the latest model.

Hi -
I just replied in another thread on what may be the same topic. Search in the general w210 forum for "off throttle vibration". (I'll see if I can figure out a thread / post number...)
Seems that often the root cause is rear subframe bearings, and can be remedied either by replacing them or by removing the differential mount shim (the latter being very easy).
Hope this helps...

Hi and Thanks guys.
I was experimenting with tire pressures before the car was surprisingly quickly purchased!!
35psi all over and 45 on the passenger front tire almost negated any shimmy whatsoever.
Weird!
Anyway to sum up...I will be looking for another soon-a 2002 if I can find one.
You guys show much restraint...DON'T YOU WANT TO KNOW HOW MUCH I GOT FOR THE CAR!!??

Actually, if you have some pics of the car before it was sold, I'm curious to see it. I read your post of the guys ogling it before buying it, it must've been a beauty! THEN I'd want to know how much you got for it...
