2002 AMG E55 New Owner

After many years of wanting a 2002 AMG E55, I finally pulled the trigger on what I hope is a great car and long term ownership as I tend to keep my cars a long time. Bought my E55, Brilliant Silver/Charcoal, from the 3rd owner with 98k, non-smoker, all services up to date, PPI reveled nothing devastating, both keys, interior as new, new Michelins, original window sticker and all books, Motorola phone, first aid kit never opened, etc. Only issues that I am aware of are bad pixels for temp and time and a bad driver side door mirror. Here is a cell phone picture of the car, better pictures and regular updates will follow.

Bad pixel repair writeups are available on the forum via search.

Bad driver door mirror could be as simple as the problem I found on mine.

https://mbworld.org/forums/e-class-w...tion-only.html

You will have to read up on how to release the mirror cover. Basically, push mirror back against window, look for the vertical "wire" and lift it over the center catch. Mirror housing then pulls off. IIRC, I needed both 5-point and 6-point torx bits to remove the mirror motor (6-point) and mirror bracket (5-point) from the door.

Enjoy the car.

Thanks BW. Searching bad pixels now, this site is a tremendous tool for any and all E55 repairs. My left side mirror has a white haze, looks like it is failing from the inside out...its not heated so I am hoping it is a simple replace the glass issue.

Welcome Swift!

Congrats on the purchase. These are fantastic cars. 98,000 miles is nothing.

I would recommend one set of things to do right now:

1. transmission flush (if it hasn't been done). Not the Mercedes service of pan drop and oil replace (that is only 3 quarts), a drain, replace, run, drain, replace run, until you go through about 15 quarts of Mercedes .14 fluid (or whatever the latest compatible fluid is).
You need to get fluid out of the cooler, torque converter, and valve body for a thorough change. ALSO- check the wiring harness connector at the transmission for leakage into the ECU box.

2. Mobile 1 gear oil in the differential

That's it!

SH thanks for the transmission advice...I am sure the drain, run, refill procedure has been chronicled but I can't seem to find it. Do you change the filter each time and are you recommending the car be driven in between fluid changes?

No, sorry, what I mean is, drop the pan, drain the fluid, drain the cooler from the line, reinstall pan and line, refill, run motor, shift through gears, shut down, repeat until you do this about five times.

A better way I've seen on other cars is to remove the cooler return line and run the engine, selecting through the trans gears. Pump out fluid until it sputters, shut down, refill with same quantity you pumped out, do it again. This flushes the system well. You should use a five gallon bucket doing it this way. I have not seen it done on these cars. It should pump out about 4-6 quarts before it sputters.

What did your floormats look like and where did you get yours?

Are they "E55 AMG" or "AMG" floormats?

Next round, consider some AFE Pro Dry S air filters. Not oil based like K&N and they can be cleaned. Gives it a different sound, imo, and seem to have good air flow. When I change my oil, I always clean the filters and clean the MAF sensor.

With the maintenance you performed, it should run great!!!

I used stock MB air filters. The original floor mats in my car were AMG E55 black trimmed in silver but I like the blue trim better...ordered them from my dealer and he shipped them to my house in 3 days.
